Ninh Binh to Hoi An: should you take a night train, sleeper bus, or flight?

The train from Ninh Binh to Da Nang takes around 13-14.5 hours, followed by roughly another hour to reach Hoi An. A night train is ideal if you want to sleep along the way, while a sleeper bus can be more convenient if it drops you off directly in Hoi An.

Phượng La CàPublished 24 min read

Two Reunification trains pass each other at a small station on the railway over the Hai Van Pass, with forested slopes right behind.

Hoi An has neither a railway station nor an airport of its own. Following Vietnam’s administrative restructuring in 2025, the Ancient Town is now part of Hoi An Ward, Da Nang City, rather than Quang Nam Province, as older booking websites may still indicate. If you take the train from Ninh Binh, you’ll need to get off at Da Nang Railway Station and continue by road. Some sleeper buses, however, can take you directly to Hoi An.

How long does it take to travel from Ninh Binh to Hoi An?

If you’re staying in Tam Coc, Trang An, or central Ninh Binh, there are three main ways to reach Hoi An: take a train to Da Nang and transfer to a road vehicle, book a sleeper bus to Hoi An, or travel to Noi Bai or Cat Bi Airport and fly to Da Nang.

The road distance between Ninh Binh and Hoi An is approximately 700-750 km, depending on your starting point and route. None of these options will get you to the Ancient Town in just a couple of hours, even if you fly.

TransportEstimated total travel timeWhat to know
Night train + transfer to Hoi An14-16 hoursChange transport at Da Nang Railway Station
Sleeper bus to Hoi An12-15 hoursConfirm the exact drop-off location
Flight from Noi Bai or Cat Bi7-10 hoursInclude airport transfers and waiting time
Train to Hue, overnight stay, then Hoi AnAt least 2 days with sightseeingBest if you want to explore Hue

These are planning estimates, not guaranteed arrival times. Trains follow published schedules but can still be delayed. Long-distance buses depend on traffic, pickup arrangements, rest stops, and road conditions.

For international travelers making their way through Vietnam from north to south, the SE3 night train is one of the first options worth considering. According to the November 2026 timetable, it leaves Ninh Binh at 9:36 PM and reaches Da Nang at around 10:28 AM the following morning.

If you’re traveling with several bags and would rather avoid changing vehicles in Da Nang, a sleeper bus with a drop-off point in Hoi An may be easier. The ride can feel long, but at least you won’t have to move your suitcase from the train to another vehicle.

Getting from Tam Coc or Trang An to Ninh Binh Railway Station

Ninh Binh Railway Station is close to the urban center, not beside the boat piers in Tam Coc or Trang An.

The front of Ninh Binh railway station, where Reunification trains to Hue and Da Nang stop for passengers.

The station is approximately 6 km by road from Tam Coc Boat Wharf and about 9.5 km from Trang An Boat Wharf. If you’re traveling with luggage, a taxi or a transfer arranged through your accommodation is usually more convenient.

If you’re taking the SE3 train at 9:36 PM, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy Ninh Binh during the day. You could take a Trang An boat trip in the morning, return for lunch, collect your bags, and head to the station in the evening.

A Trang An boat route generally takes 2-3.5 hours, depending on which itinerary you choose. Starting around 8:00 AM means you can often finish before lunch, provided there isn’t a long queue.

There’s no real need to squeeze in another boat excursion that afternoon simply because your train doesn’t leave until late. You’ll be spending most of the night traveling, so having a relaxed afternoon can make a difference.

The same approach works if you’re staying in Tam Coc. Ask your hotel or homestay whether they can keep your bags after checkout. Some properties are happy to do so, but it’s worth confirming that you can collect them late in the evening.

For the SE3 service, aim to arrive at the station around 9:00 PM to check your platform and board without rushing. Arriving slightly earlier is sensible if you’re unfamiliar with the station or have large suitcases.

Ninh Binh to Da Nang by train: which service is best for sleeping overnight?

Vietnam’s North-South Railway passes through Ninh Binh and stops in Hue before reaching Da Nang. You don’t need to return to Hanoi to board the train.

Here is the reference timetable for 2026:

TrainDeparture from Ninh BinhArrival in HueArrival in Da Nang
SE112:03 AM10:25 AM1:14 PM
SE78:16 AM7:38 PM10:15 PM
SE510:16 AM9:35 PM12:21 AM next day
SE93:17 PM3:07 AM next day5:48 AM next day
SE39:36 PM7:50 AM next day10:28 AM next day
SE199:57 PM8:45 AM next day11:35 AM next day

These times follow Vietnam Railways ticketing data for 2026. Not every train operates or opens ticket sales in the same way on every date, so always check the exact day you plan to travel.

Choose SE3 if you want to reach Hoi An around lunchtime

SE3 leaves Ninh Binh at 9:36 PM and takes 12 hours and 52 minutes to reach Da Nang.

If it arrives on time at 10:28 AM, you can leave the station, take a car to Hoi An, and potentially reach the Ancient Town area around 11:30 AM-12:00 PM, assuming your transfer is ready and traffic is reasonable.

That’s a convenient time to drop your bags at the hotel, have lunch, and check in afterward. Just don’t assume your room will be available before the property’s official check-in time.

It’s also better not to book a Hoi An tour that starts at 11:00 AM. The scheduled train arrival is 10:28 AM, but getting off the train, collecting your belongings, finding your driver, and covering the final stretch all take time.

SE19 is another option for a slightly later departure

SE19 leaves Ninh Binh at 9:57 PM, arrives in Hue at 8:45 AM, and reaches Da Nang at 11:35 AM the following day.

In 2026, SE19 offers four-berth sleeper cabins at prices considerably higher than ordinary soft seats on other services.

It’s worth checking if you want a sleeping compartment and prefer to arrive in Da Nang closer to lunchtime.

The departure times of SE3 and SE19 are only 21 minutes apart, yet their arrivals in Da Nang differ by more than an hour. So look at the available berth type, ticket price, and arrival time rather than choosing whichever train departs later.

SE9 works if you want to leave in the afternoon

SE9 departs Ninh Binh at 3:17 PM and reaches Da Nang at 5:48 AM the following morning.

You still have most of the morning in Ninh Binh before departure, but you’ll arrive in Da Nang very early. Since your Hoi An accommodation probably won’t be ready for check-in, you’ll need somewhere to leave your luggage and perhaps a plan for breakfast.

SE7 leaves Ninh Binh at 8:16 AM and arrives in Da Nang at 10:15 PM. It’s suitable if you prefer traveling during the day, although continuing to Hoi An late at night isn’t particularly convenient.

SE5 presents a similar issue, arriving in Da Nang at 12:21 AM the next day. At that hour, you shouldn’t rely on public buses to reach Hoi An.

How much does the Ninh Binh to Da Nang train cost in 2026?

Train fares depend on the seat or berth type, bunk level, travel date, and how far in advance you book.

Starting fares in 2026 on the Vietnam Railways ticketing system:

TrainStarting fareListed accommodation type
SE7514,000 VNDSoft seat
SE5568,000 VNDSoft seat
SE9593,000 VNDSoft seat
SE3733,000 VNDSoft seat
SE191,337,000 VNDFour-berth sleeper

The advertised prices exclude insurance according to the booking platform’s notes and may change depending on the selected date, carriage, and available places.

Don’t confuse the 733,000 VND starting fare on SE3 with a sleeper ticket. That is the soft-seat price. A berth in a four- or six-berth cabin needs to be selected separately.

For a journey lasting almost 13 hours, a proper sleeper berth is worth considering if you want a reasonable night’s rest before exploring Hoi An.

A four-berth cabin has two bunks on each side, while a six-berth cabin has three. Lower berths are easier to reach, especially if you need to get up during the night.

Six-berth cabins may be cheaper, but an upper bunk can be inconvenient for anyone who struggles with ladders or carries bulky belongings.

When booking, select Ninh Binh as your departure station and Da Nang as your destination.

If you want to stop in Hue, buy a ticket to Hue first. Don’t book all the way to Da Nang, get off in Hue, and expect to use the unused portion of your ticket on another day.

How do you get from Da Nang Railway Station to Hoi An?

Da Nang Railway Station is approximately 30-35 km by road from Hoi An Ancient Town. The journey usually takes 45-60 minutes by car when traffic is manageable.

Passengers walk along the platform at Da Nang station; Hoi An is still about 30-35 km away by road.

The station is in central Da Nang, while Hoi An lies to the southeast. You’ll need to continue by car, shared transfer, or public bus.

There are three main options.

Taxi, Grab, or private car

This is the easiest way to continue after spending the night on a train.

For transfers from Da Nang Airport or the city center to Hoi An, private transport providers advertised fares of around 300,000-500,000 VND per vehicle in 2026, depending on vehicle size, pickup point, and time of day.

If you’re leaving from Da Nang Railway Station, provide that exact pickup location when requesting a quote.

For two or three travelers, splitting the car fare can be reasonable. Your driver can usually take you to your accommodation or the nearest point accessible by car.

Hotels located deep inside the pedestrianized streets may require you to walk the final section. Send your hotel’s location to the driver before booking, particularly when rain is expected.

Shared shuttle or limousine from Da Nang to Hoi An

A shared transfer is useful for solo travelers who want something cheaper than hiring a whole car.

In 2026, providers such as An Phu Hoi An Travel and Thuan Phat Limousine offered pickup points at or near Da Nang Railway Station.

Advertised fares started at approximately 130,500 VND and could exceed 200,000 VND per seat, depending on the provider and vehicle type.

The trade-off is that you’ll need to follow the scheduled departure and agreed pickup and drop-off locations.

Some services stop at offices along Dao Duy Tu, Nguyen Phan Vinh, or other streets outside the pedestrian area rather than taking you directly to your hotel.

If SE3 is scheduled to reach Da Nang at 10:28 AM, booking a shuttle for 10:30 AM is cutting it far too close. Choose a later departure or ask whether the operator can accommodate delayed trains.

Public bus

DanangBus Route 02 connects Da Nang Central Bus Station with Hoi An and Cua Dai.

In 2026, tickets cost approximately 8,000-30,000 VND per journey, depending on the distance traveled.

The route passes Hoi An Bus Station before continuing toward Cua Dai.

Da Nang Central Bus Station is not Da Nang Railway Station. You cannot simply step off the train and expect Route 02 to be waiting outside.

To use this bus, you’ll need to reach a suitable stop along its route. The extra transfer may make it less appealing if you’re carrying a large suitcase.

For late-night or very early arrivals, a pre-arranged pickup or a night in Da Nang is safer than counting on a public bus.

Ninh Binh to Hoi An by sleeper bus: do you need to transfer in Da Nang?

Not necessarily. Several operators sell Ninh Binh-Hoi An tickets with drop-off points at their offices in Hoi An.

However, a route labeled "Hoi An" doesn’t automatically mean the bus will take you to the Ancient Town or your accommodation.

Reference schedules for 2026:

Tan Kim Chi8:45 PM9:00 AM next dayFrom 700,000 VND
HK BUSLINES8:30 PM9:30 AM next dayAround 850,000 VND
Queen Cafe8:30 PM11:00 AM next dayAround 800,000 VND
G8 Open TourEvening departures from around 9:15 PMFollowing morningAround 900,000 VND

These are reference schedules and fares advertised in 2026, not guaranteed prices for your travel date. Departure times can also vary depending on your selected pickup point.

Choose your bus based on pickup location, not just price

Tan Kim Chi has an 8:45 PM service with pickup listed near PVOIL Ninh Binh No. 1 petrol station and drop-off at its Hoi An office. Its Hoi An drop-off address has been listed on Ton Duc Thang Street.

HK BUSLINES offers an 8:30 PM departure from its office at 2A 27/7 Street in Ninh Binh, with a scheduled arrival at its Hoi An office around 9:30 AM the next morning.

Queen Cafe also has a pickup point on 27/7 Street. Some of its journeys take longer and may not reach Hoi An until close to noon.

G8 Open Tour has pickup options associated with Tam Coc and central Ninh Binh, depending on the service. It’s worth checking if you’re staying in a Tam Coc homestay and would prefer not to travel back into the urban center.

For example, a ticket that’s 100,000 VND cheaper may no longer be such a bargain if you need an additional taxi ride to a petrol station along the highway.

The day before departure, send the bus company a Google Maps location pin for your accommodation. Ask whether the main coach will pick you up or whether you’ll need a smaller connecting vehicle.

Get the confirmed pickup address, meeting time, and contact number in writing.

Is a single or double sleeper cabin worth paying for?

This journey is long enough for your sleeping arrangement to make a noticeable difference the next day.

Standard sleeper buses generally have narrower beds than private-cabin services. Private cabins offer curtains, greater separation from other passengers, and sometimes charging ports, but not every vehicle has an onboard toilet.

For double cabins, check the actual dimensions and passenger rules. The name alone doesn’t guarantee that two adults can lie as comfortably as they would in a hotel bed.

Anyone taller than 1.8 m should ask about the actual bed length before paying.

Two people traveling with several large bags should also check the luggage arrangement. Many cabins don’t have enough space for suitcases beside the bed, so larger luggage goes into the storage compartment underneath the bus.

A sleeper bus is most convenient when it picks you up near your accommodation and drops you off in Hoi An in the morning.

If the itinerary involves changing vehicles in Da Nang, treat it as a transfer journey, even when the ticket displays Hoi An as the final destination.

Flying from Ninh Binh to Hoi An: should you use Noi Bai or Cat Bi Airport?

Ninh Binh doesn’t currently have a commercial passenger airport. There are no direct flights from Ninh Binh to Hoi An.

To fly, you’ll normally need to travel to one of two airports:

  • Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), Hanoi.
  • Cat Bi International Airport (HPH), Hai Phong.

Both can provide flight connections to Da Nang International Airport (DAD), followed by a road transfer to Hoi An.

Flying from Noi Bai: more departure options

Noi Bai Airport is approximately 120 km from central Ninh Binh, typically 2-2.5 hours away by car when traffic is favorable.

Trang An Limousine and Ninh Binh Car are among the operators offering transfers between the Ninh Binh area and the airport.

Reference prices for 2026:

  • Ninh Binh Car: approximately 300,000-400,000 VND per person.
  • Trang An Limousine: approximately 360,000-450,000 VND per person.

Listed pickup locations include Trang An Boat Wharf, Tam Coc, and offices in Ninh Binh. Not every departure serves every pickup point, so confirm the exact address when booking.

Several airlines operate the Hanoi-Da Nang route.

For example, Vietjet Air tickets in 2026 were listed on some dates at approximately 1,044,181 VND per person on a booking platform, including displayed taxes and fees. Checked baggage should not be assumed to be included.

The flight itself usually takes around 1 hour and 20-30 minutes.

But a flight lasting just over an hour doesn’t mean you’ll reach Hoi An from Ninh Binh in little more than an hour.

You still need to allow time for the trip to Noi Bai, airport check-in, security, collecting your baggage in Da Nang, and another journey of roughly an hour to Hoi An.

Flying from Cat Bi: no need to return to Hanoi

For travelers moving south through Vietnam, Cat Bi is worth considering because it avoids going back toward central Hanoi.

A private car from Ninh Binh to Cat Bi Airport usually takes approximately 2.5-3 hours. Some pre-booked taxi services advertised travel times of around 2 hours and 55 minutes for this journey in 2026.

Vietjet operates flights between Hai Phong and Da Nang.

Reference flight schedules for late 2026 included:

FlightDeparture from Cat BiArrival in Da Nang
VJ7238:55 AM10:10 AM
VJ7254:40 PM6:00 PM

Services depend on the operating date, so check the schedule before booking.

In 2026, Vietjet flights from Cat Bi to Da Nang were listed on selected dates from approximately 1,135,781 VND per person. Prices vary by flight, fare type, and baggage allowance.

The 8:55 AM departure isn’t particularly convenient if you’re leaving Ninh Binh on the same morning.

To reach the airport before 7:00 AM, you may have to leave your accommodation very early.

An afternoon flight is easier to fit into your travel day, provided it operates on your chosen date.

For groups of two to four, it’s also worth comparing the cost of a private transfer from Ninh Binh to Cat Bi with buying several limousine seats to Noi Bai.

Calculate the entire journey before deciding whether flying is faster

Here’s an example of the time you should allow when starting in central Ninh Binh:

Journey stageTime to allow
Car transfer to Noi Bai or Cat Bi2.5-3 hours
Airport check-in, security, and waitingAround 2 hours
Flight to Da Nang1 hour 15-30 minutes
Disembarking, collecting luggage, finding your transfer30-60 minutes
Da Nang to Hoi An45-60 minutes

That adds up to roughly 7-8.5 hours when connections work smoothly.

If the flight schedule doesn’t line up well, you spend longer waiting for a transfer, or traffic is heavy, 9-10 hours is entirely possible.

From Da Nang Airport, you can arrange a private transfer, take a taxi or Grab, or check whether public bus Route 01SB to Hoi An fits your arrival time.

Check the current timetable and stops for Route 01SB before traveling. Don’t assume a public bus will still be operating if your flight lands late at night.

Flying is a good option if saving daytime travel hours is your priority.

For travelers simply continuing south through Vietnam without returning toward Hanoi, a night train or sleeper bus often fits the route more naturally.

Is Hue worth a stop between Ninh Binh and Hoi An?

Yes, especially if you have at least one night to spend there.

Hue lies along the railway route from Ninh Binh to Da Nang, so visiting doesn’t require a major detour.

SE3 leaves Ninh Binh at 9:36 PM and arrives at Hue Railway Station at approximately 7:50 AM the following morning.

That’s a convenient arrival time for breakfast, dropping off your luggage, and starting a day of sightseeing.

A practical itinerary would be:

Day 1: Explore Trang An or Tam Coc in the morning. Board SE3 at Ninh Binh Railway Station in the evening.

Day 2: Arrive in Hue at 7:50 AM and leave your bags at your accommodation. Spend much of the day exploring the Imperial City and central Hue, then stay overnight.

Day 3: Take the train from Hue to Da Nang via the Hai Van Pass, then continue to Hoi An.

There’s no need to cram several royal tombs into your first afternoon simply because you’ve arrived in Hue. The distances between attractions can add up, and getting around takes longer than the map sometimes suggests.

Hue to Da Nang on the heritage train

The Central Heritage Connection tourist train is an interesting option if you want to see Lang Co Bay and the railway through the Hai Van Pass.

A Reunification train skirts the Hai Van slopes, about to enter a tunnel on the Hue - Da Nang stretch.

November 2026 reference timetable:

TrainDeparture from HueArrival in Da Nang
HĐ17:05 AM10:10 AM
HĐ32:30 PM6:15 PM

In 2026, certain standard fares were around 180,000 VND on weekdays and 210,000 VND on weekends; some listings started at approximately 234,000 VND.

The exact fare depends on the date and seat selected.

If you’d like to reach Hoi An around lunchtime, choose HĐ1 and head to Hue Railway Station early.

After arriving at Da Nang Railway Station at 10:10 AM, you can continue to Hoi An by road.

HĐ3 is more suitable if you want to spend an additional morning in Hue, but it doesn’t reach Da Nang until 6:15 PM. With the onward transfer, you’ll generally arrive in Hoi An in the evening.

Can you stop in Hue for just a few hours?

You can, provided the connecting train times work.

SE3 reaches Hue at 7:50 AM, while HĐ3 leaves at 2:30 PM.

That gives you a little over six hours between trains, before deducting time for luggage storage, local transport, and returning to the station.

It’s enough for a short visit, but not enough to explore Hue comfortably.

If you want to tour the Imperial City, enjoy a proper local meal, and spend time inside the historical complex, plan carefully around your departure.

If you only have two nights in Hoi An before continuing to Nha Trang or Ho Chi Minh City, skipping Hue is also a perfectly reasonable decision.

Traveling directly to Da Nang leaves more time for the rest of your journey.

What about taking a sleeper bus from Ninh Binh to Hue?

A sleeper bus from Ninh Binh to Hue is another option if you want to break up the journey but can’t find a suitable train ticket.

Departures in 2026 included:

Bus operatorDeparture from Ninh BinhEstimated arrival in HueFare
Camel Travel7:30 PM6:00 AM next dayAround 550,000 VND
Queen Cafe8:00 PMAround 7:06 AM next dayFrom 450,000 VND
Binh Hoai Limousine8:25 PMAround 7:31 AM next dayAround 800,000 VND
Cua Ong Bus8:30 PMAround 7:00 AM next dayAround 450,000 VND

Operators may offer several pickup points with different meeting times.

Queen Cafe lists a pickup at 2A 27/7 Street in Ninh Binh, while Camel Travel has options associated with Dong Gung Bus Station and Ninh Binh Railway Station.

Drop-off locations in Hue also vary. Some services use offices in the center, while others stop at a bus station.

Staying overnight in Hue? A central drop-off saves you hassle compared with being left at a roadside stop far from your accommodation.

After sightseeing in Hue, you can continue to Da Nang by heritage train, regular SE train, or road transport.

The LK01 intercity bus also connects Hue South Bus Station with Da Nang Central Bus Station. The published full-route fare in 2026 was 80,000 VND per person.

This bus is useful for daytime travel when you’re not in a rush to reach Hoi An.

If you want to connect several journeys on the same day, the Hue-Da Nang train is often easier to plan around because the railway timetable provides a specific station arrival time.

Traveling the other way: Hoi An to Ninh Binh

For the reverse journey, the two main options are still sleeper buses and overnight trains departing from Da Nang.

Sleeper bus from Hoi An to Ninh Binh

HK BUSLINES operates services from its Hoi An office to Ninh Binh.

Reference schedules for late 2026 included:

Departure from Hoi AnArrival in Ninh Binh
3:00 PM4:00 AM next day
4:00 PM5:00 AM next day
5:00 PM6:00 AM next day
6:30 PM7:30 AM next day

Booking platforms listed HK BUSLINES fares from Hoi An to Ninh Binh at approximately 800,000-830,000 VND per person in 2026, depending on cabin type and booking channel.

The 6:30 PM departure arriving at 7:30 AM is convenient if you’re planning to travel directly to Tam Coc, leave your bags, and start sightseeing after breakfast.

The earlier services arriving at 4:00 AM or 5:00 AM require more thought.

If your homestay doesn’t have overnight reception, arriving several hours before check-in can leave you without a comfortable place to wait.

Train from Da Nang to Ninh Binh

Going by rail means first getting from Hoi An to Da Nang Railway Station before departure.

Reference timetable for 2026:

TrainDeparture from Da NangArrival in Ninh Binh
SE62:01 AM4:52 PM
SE412:28 PM2:11 AM next day
SE21:21 PM3:21 AM next day
SE206:00 PM7:59 AM next day
SE811:41 PM1:56 PM next day

SE20 is worth considering if you’d like to sleep on the train and reach Ninh Binh the following morning.

In 2026, SE20 had starting fares of approximately 828,000 VND for the accommodation type shown. Other services, including SE8, SE6, and SE4, listed soft-seat fares starting at around 514,000-695,000 VND, depending on the date.

For SE20 at 6:00 PM, aim to leave Hoi An around 3:30-4:00 PM if using a private car.

That gives you time to reach Da Nang and some room for unexpected delays before boarding.

Don’t book a shared shuttle that promises to reach the station at exactly 5:50 PM just because your train leaves ten minutes later.

Train and road transport schedules are managed separately. One company doesn’t guarantee you’ll make the connection to another.

Traveling in October or November: how can central Vietnam’s rainy season affect your trip?

October and November are months when you need to pay particular attention to heavy rain in Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An.

Hue’s 2026 rainy season could bring multiple flood events between September and December, mostly in October and November.

Da Nang also faces a risk of widespread heavy rain and flooding in low-lying areas toward the end of the year.

For a Ninh Binh-Hoi An journey, the concern isn’t limited to whether the Ancient Town itself is flooded.

Trains can be delayed or rescheduled

The North-South Railway crosses many rivers, bridges, mountain passes, and low-lying sections of central Vietnam.

During severe rain, flooding, landslides, or unsafe track conditions may require railway authorities to reduce train speeds, adjust schedules, or temporarily suspend services on affected sections.

An SE3 train scheduled to reach Hue at 7:50 AM won’t necessarily arrive on time during a major flood event.

If you’ve already booked a train and a private car pickup in Da Nang, tell the transfer company that the pickup may need to follow the train’s actual arrival.

For nonrefundable shared shuttle tickets, ask in advance what happens if your train is late.

Sleeper buses depend on road conditions

Buses traveling to Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An rely on open roads and any traffic restrictions imposed by local authorities.

Heavy rain can flood certain stretches, force vehicles onto alternative routes, slow journeys, or prevent buses from reaching their usual drop-off points.

Roads near Hoi An Ancient Town and the riverside can become inconvenient even when long-distance buses are still operating.

That’s why you should check two separate things: whether the bus is running to Da Nang or Hoi An, and whether it can actually reach the area where your accommodation is located.

Flying doesn’t completely remove weather risks

Flying avoids much of the long overland journey through central Vietnam, but severe weather can still affect takeoffs and landings.

After arriving at Da Nang Airport, the road journey to Hoi An may also be affected by local flooding.

Landing in Da Nang late in the evening and continuing to Hoi An during particularly heavy rain isn’t necessarily easier than taking the train.

When your dates fall during an official flood warning, keep your accommodation bookings flexible. Don’t attempt to cross flooded roads just to reach a hotel you’ve already paid for.

What should you check before departure?

Around 48 hours before leaving Ninh Binh, check the weather forecasts for both Hue and Da Nang, rather than looking only at Hoi An.

If you’re traveling by train, check railway operating announcements. If you’re taking a bus, contact the operator about road conditions and possible route changes.

The day before departure, reconfirm your pickup location and time with the bus company or transfer provider.

On the day itself, continue checking official transport updates.

A forecast of rain doesn’t automatically mean your service will be canceled. However, a cancellation or suspension notice from the operator should always take priority over an old departure time displayed on a booking website.

Which route makes the most sense for your Vietnam itinerary?

For travelers working their way through Vietnam from north to south, the best choice often depends more on how many days you have left than on a difference of a few hundred thousand dong.

If you have only two days for Hoi An: Take the SE3 night train or a sleeper bus arriving in Hoi An the following morning. You’ll still have most of your first day to rest and explore without returning toward Hanoi.

If you have three or four days in central Vietnam: Take SE3 to Hue, spend a night there, and continue the next day by train across the Hai Van Pass to Da Nang before heading to Hoi An. You gain a proper stop in Hue without having to backtrack.

If you’re traveling with young children or someone who struggles to sleep on buses: Compare flights from Noi Bai and Cat Bi. The total journey may be shorter, but include airport transfers and baggage costs in the comparison.

If you’re staying at a Tam Coc homestay and want fewer transfers: Look for a sleeper bus with a confirmed pickup close to Tam Coc and a drop-off in Hoi An. Don’t choose a service solely because the search result says "Ninh Binh-Hoi An."

If you’re traveling in October or November: Prioritize tickets and accommodation with clear change policies. Tight connections between trains, buses, and flights can become expensive when bad weather disrupts the schedule.

For example, an SE3 train arriving in Da Nang at 10:28 AM and a sleeper bus arriving in Hoi An at 9:30 AM may not be very different in terms of when you actually reach your accommodation.

The more useful comparison is how comfortably you’ll sleep, the combined ticket and transfer cost, and the exact location where you’ll be dropped off.

Would you rather reach Hoi An as early as possible, sleep comfortably on a train, or spend an extra night exploring Hue? Once you’ve decided what matters most, choosing between the night train, sleeper bus, and flight becomes much easier.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights from Ninh Binh to Hoi An?

No. Ninh Binh doesn't have a commercial passenger airport, and Hoi An has no airport of its own. You'll need to travel to Noi Bai Airport near Hanoi or Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong, fly to Da Nang, and continue approximately 30 km by road to Hoi An.

How long does it take to travel from Ninh Binh to Hoi An?

Sleeper buses typically take around 12-15 hours, depending on the operator and pickup and drop-off locations. Trains to Da Nang take approximately 13-14.5 hours, followed by a 45-60-minute transfer to Hoi An plus any waiting time. Flying usually takes around 7-10 hours for the complete journey from Ninh Binh.

Which night train is better from Ninh Binh to Da Nang, SE3 or SE19?

According to the November 2026 timetable, SE3 leaves Ninh Binh at 9:36 PM and arrives in Da Nang at 10:28 AM the following day. SE19 departs at 9:57 PM and arrives at 11:35 AM. Compare the available sleeper berths and prices rather than assuming the cheapest displayed soft-seat fare includes a bed.

Is Hue worth stopping at between Ninh Binh and Hoi An?
