How to get to Viet Hai Village, Cat Ba: boats, bikes and costs

Before heading to Viet Hai Village, arrange your return boat from Ben Beo Pier and bring enough Vietnamese dong for entrance fees and local transport. Staying overnight gives you the evening and early morning after the cruise groups have left.

A farmer bends over freshly planted paddies, with a line of trees, rooftops and hazy limestone ridges closing in around the Viet Hai valley.

Viet Hai Village is on Cat Ba Island, but no road runs from Cat Ba Town straight to it. You’ll need to take a boat across Lan Ha Bay or hike through Cat Ba National Park before reaching this little valley surrounded by limestone mountains.

Where is Viet Hai Village in Cat Ba?

Viet Hai Village is located in the Cat Hai Special Zone of Hai Phong, roughly 10 km from central Cat Ba Town, on the Lan Ha Bay side of the island. It’s tucked into a valley within Cat Ba National Park, surrounded by forested mountains, small fields, and green hills.

Although Viet Hai is often described as an old fishing village, it also feels very much like a traditional northern Vietnamese farming community. You’ll find rice paddies, vegetable gardens, low houses, and families whose daily lives are connected to the surrounding land and forest.

Red- and blue-roofed houses sit right at the foot of a forested limestone ridge, facing an open grassy field where cows graze.

In August 2025, Viet Hai was officially recognized as a community tourism destination, becoming the 13th recognized tourism destination in Hai Phong under Vietnam’s 2017 Tourism Law. At the time of the announcement, the village had 87 households and 295 residents across two hamlets.

Only about 10 km from Cat Ba Town, the village feels far removed from its busy streets. Cycle past rice fields in the morning, sit beneath a shaded veranda in the afternoon, and eat a home-cooked dinner with mountains rising all around you.

That isolation means planning your transport in and out matters more here than at most other attractions on Cat Ba Island.

How to get to Viet Hai Village: boat, speedboat, or jungle trek?

There are three ways in, from a relaxed half-day visit to a hard hike through the national park.

Transport optionApproximate travel timeBest for
Speedboat from Ben Beo Pier15 minutes by boat, plus 8-10 minutes by electric cartIndependent travelers, families, homestay guests
Regular boat or Lan Ha Bay cruiseAround 30-45 minutes for a direct trip; longer with sightseeing stopsVisitors combining the village with a bay cruise
Trekking through Cat Ba National ParkUsually 4-5 hours; up to 6-7 hours at a slower paceFit travelers and hiking enthusiasts

These estimates exclude waiting time, ticket arrangements, and the journey from your accommodation to the departure point.

Taking a speedboat from Ben Beo Pier

Independent travelers, families, homestay guests

The speedboat is the simplest way to reach Viet Hai on your own, without a full-day organized tour.

From central Cat Ba Town, travel approximately 2 km to Ben Beo Pier. The journey takes around 5-10 minutes by taxi or 20-25 minutes on foot, depending on where you’re staying.

At Ben Beo, board a speedboat across Lan Ha Bay to Viet Hai Pier. A direct speedboat usually takes around 15 minutes, while a regular boat takes approximately 30 minutes or longer depending on the vessel and sea conditions.

One local accommodation provider, Lan Homestay, lists the following reference speedboat prices for 2026:

  • USD 30 per speedboat trip for up to two passengers.
  • An additional USD 5 for each extra passenger.
  • Lan Ha Bay entrance fees and electric cart transfers are charged separately.

This is an example of a private transfer offered through a homestay, not an official fixed fare for every speedboat departing from Ben Beo. Other boat operators may charge different rates depending on the season, group size, and boat type.

Contact your homestay or transport provider before your travel date and arrange both the outbound and return journeys.

Ben Beo serves tourist boats and local vessels, so don’t expect a universal, publicly advertised timetable like you’d find at a regular ferry terminal.

Don’t stop at the one-way fare. Ask about the total round-trip price, your pickup time, and what happens when boats are suspended because of bad weather.

Joining a Lan Ha Bay cruise that visits Viet Hai

Visitors combining the village with a bay cruise

Many Lan Ha Bay day cruises and overnight cruise itineraries include a stop at Viet Hai Village.

Typically, the boat docks at Viet Hai Pier, passengers transfer to electric carts or bicycles, and the group explores the village before returning to the cruise. Some itineraries also include lunch or a short local activity.

This is a convenient choice when you only have one day in Cat Ba. Your transfers are organized for you, and the route passes limestone islands and floating settlements on the bay.

However, not every Lan Ha Bay cruise visits Viet Hai. Some focus on kayaking and swimming spots, while others specifically include time in the village.

Before booking, confirm whether your cruise actually stops at Viet Hai, how long you’ll spend there, and whether electric carts or bicycle rentals are included.

For travelers staying overnight in the village, another possibility is arranging a Lan Ha Bay cruise that drops you off at Viet Hai Pier rather than returning to Ben Beo.

Some tours can reach the village pier at around 3:30 PM. You’ll need to arrange this with the operator in advance, particularly when traveling with luggage, since not every shared cruise allows passengers to leave the tour at an intermediate stop.

Trekking to Viet Hai through Cat Ba National Park

Fit travelers and hiking enthusiasts

The third way in is on foot, through Cat Ba National Park.

The usual trekking route begins in the central area of Cat Ba National Park and heads through the forest toward Ao Ech, Ang Phay, and eventually the Viet Hai valley.

The distance is generally described as around 9-12 km, depending on the exact trail and starting point.

Most hikers take approximately 4-5 hours, while slower groups or travelers taking frequent breaks may need 6-7 hours.

Expect repeated short ascents and descents rather than one long climb, over tree roots, sharp limestone rocks, and slippery moss-covered surfaces.

The best moment comes when the dense forest opens up and the valley appears below, with a few small rooftops tucked between the mountains.

Wear hiking shoes with reliable grip, bring suitable gloves, carry at least around 1.5-2 liters of drinking water per person, and pack snacks, insect repellent, and a lightweight raincoat.

Starting early, ideally before 8 AM, gives you more daylight to complete the route.

Hire an experienced local guide. Parts of the trail are hard to follow, mobile reception comes and goes, and the path gets dangerous after rain.

A practical itinerary is to trek into Viet Hai, rest or stay overnight, and take a boat back to Ben Beo Pier.

Your homestay can also send your luggage to the village by boat while you hike, for a reference price of approximately VND 350,000 per trip.

Huge tree roots spill over moss-covered limestone boulders in Cat Ba National Park, the kind of terrain you'll be scrambling over on the forest trail.

How do you get from Viet Hai Pier to the village?

Viet Hai Pier is not the village center: a road of roughly 4-5 km still separates the pier from the main residential area, where most homestays are located.

This road is one of the prettiest parts of the journey. The narrow road winds between limestone cliffs, forest, and small fields. At times, you’ll pass beneath towering rock faces before the scenery suddenly opens into a green valley.

A concrete road with a low railing runs along the water opposite forested limestone cliffs, with visitors cycling along it in a group.

Electric cart: The easiest and fastest choice, taking approximately 8-10 minutes. The reference fare for 2026 is around VND 50,000 per person, one way. Bring cash for the driver and confirm your drop-off point.

Bicycle: Allow roughly 20-30 minutes, depending on your pace. Some homestays rent bicycles for around VND 30,000 per day, making it possible to cycle between the pier and the village and continue exploring afterward.

Walking: The journey takes approximately 60-90 minutes, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. It suits cooler weather and a small backpack.

An electric cart makes more sense on arrival if you’re carrying a suitcase or heavy luggage. Once you’ve checked in, rent a bicycle to get around the village.

How much does it cost to visit Viet Hai Village?

A trip to Viet Hai involves several separate expenses, not just your boat fare.

Keep official entrance fees separate from privately operated services such as boat transfers, electric carts, and bicycle rentals.

Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba National Park entrance fees in 2026

From January 1, 2026, Hai Phong introduced updated sightseeing fees.

FeeAdultsChildren aged 6 and above
Sightseeing in the bays of the Cat Ba Archipelago, including Lan Ha BayVND 120,000 per visitVND 60,000
Cat Ba National Park entranceVND 160,000 per visitVND 80,000
Electric cart, Viet Hai Pier to the villageAround VND 50,000 per person, one wayConfirm with the operator
Bicycle rental at selected homestaysAround VND 30,000 per dayDepends on the bicycle and rental provider

Children under six are exempt from the sightseeing fees. Certain other visitors may qualify for exemptions or reductions under the relevant regulations.

The official sightseeing fees apply to both Vietnamese and international tourists.

Traveling to Viet Hai by boat through Lan Ha Bay? Budget for the bay sightseeing fee in addition to your transport fare.

On the national park trekking route, you’ll pay the national park entrance fee at the gate.

Travelers who hike into the village and return by boat should allow for both types of fees. If your itinerary includes different routes on separate days, ask the ticket operator how the fees apply to each visit.

The VND 400,000 adult sightseeing fee covers itineraries with one night of accommodation on the bays; a homestay night on land in Viet Hai is a different thing.

Example budget for two people traveling by speedboat

Suppose two adults book a private speedboat transfer from Ben Beo to Viet Hai using the homestay’s reference price.

Expense for the journey into Viet HaiCost
One-way speedboat for two passengersUSD 30
Lan Ha Bay sightseeing feesVND 240,000
Electric cart transfer into the villageVND 100,000
Total for the inbound journeyUSD 30 + VND 340,000

This estimate doesn’t include the return boat, electric cart back to the pier, transportation to Ben Beo, meals, or accommodation.

A shared sightseeing tour might work out cheaper for one or two travelers, but only after you’ve checked exactly which fees and transfers are included.

How much cash should you bring?

Some homestays can arrange advance payments or accept certain payment methods at checkout. Many small restaurants, electric cart drivers, and boat operators still prefer cash, and many places don’t take international credit cards.

For a day trip with boat transfers already arranged, plan on carrying around VND 500,000-800,000 per person for expenses that may not be included and unexpected costs.

Staying overnight? Bring additional cash for dinner, drinks, activities, and the possibility of extending your accommodation because of weather delays.

International visitors should exchange their currency into Vietnamese dong before reaching the village.

Smaller banknotes are especially useful for electric carts, drinks, and other minor purchases.

Viet Hai Village homestays: is staying overnight worth it?

Cruise passengers see Viet Hai during the day.

By late afternoon, the tour groups have generally returned to their boats, and the village becomes noticeably quieter.

Stay the night and there’s time to cycle along the smaller village paths, share dinner with your hosts, and wake up with mist drifting across the mountains.

What types of homestays are available?

Accommodation in Viet Hai mainly consists of garden bungalows and rooms in local family homes.

Brick bungalows with thatched roofs, red-tiled porches and wooden chairs stand among banana plants at the foot of the hills.

Expect smaller properties and simpler facilities than the hotels in Cat Ba Town.

Two names worth researching are Lan Homestay and The Whisper of Nature Bungalow.

In 2026, double rooms on booking platforms have generally been listed at approximately USD 25-35 per night, depending on room type and travel dates.

Lan Homestay, for example, advertises some double rooms at around VND 650,000-750,000 per night on its official website.

Before booking, check the exact facilities. Not every room includes air conditioning, hot water, a private bathroom, or breakfast.

Accommodation choices remain limited. In 2024, only a small number of local households were operating tourism services, and relatively few offered rooms for overnight guests.

Book ahead, especially on weekends and during the summer travel season. A room booked online doesn’t include the boat to the village; confirm that separately.

What can you do in Viet Hai at night?

Viet Hai has no night market, bars, or restaurant streets.

You might arrange a home-cooked dinner, help your hosts prepare ingredients, learn about traditional wood-fired cooking, or simply sit outside chatting beneath the veranda.

Some homestays organize cooking experiences, traditional cake-making, or other activities connected to village life when arranged in advance.

On suitable evenings, you may also spot fireflies around gardens and quieter paths away from bright lights.

Their appearance depends on the season, weather, and natural conditions, though, so don’t count on seeing them.

The next morning, get up early to cycle past fields, watch smoke rising from kitchen fires, and listen to birds before the first sightseeing groups arrive.

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip is enough if your main goal is to see the village, enjoy a bicycle ride, and combine the experience with Lan Ha Bay.

You won’t need to change accommodation or carry extra luggage.

Staying overnight makes more sense for travelers who enjoy nature, slower travel, sunrise photography, or a proper rest after trekking through the national park.

Families with young children, older travelers, and anyone working around a tight departure schedule are better off with fewer transfers, since every boat leg depends on the weather.

What to do and eat in Viet Hai Village

Cycle through the valley and traditional houses

From the village center, ride past vegetable gardens, rice paddies, rows of trees, and small houses standing beneath limestone mountains.

A villager carries two buckets on a shoulder pole along a narrow lane beside green rice fields, with houses and limestone cliffs in the distance.

Some traditional structures built with local materials still offer glimpses of the older village.

Most village roads are relatively manageable by bicycle, although you may encounter gentle slopes and uneven surfaces.

Take drinking water, check your brakes, and avoid cycling too far from the residential area without knowing the route.

Stop wherever the view is good, but park the bicycle somewhere safe.

It’s also polite to ask permission before photographing residents or entering private homes.

Try a natural fish foot bath

Viet Hai has a stream where small fish gather around your feet when you dip them in.

The gentle nibbling sensation can feel surprisingly ticklish, which usually leads to plenty of laughter.

Choose a designated area where the activity is permitted, follow local guidance, and avoid entering the water with open wounds.

After heavy rain, especially when the water becomes muddy or fast-moving, it’s better to skip this activity.

Enjoy a traditional village meal

Popular options include free-range chicken, homegrown vegetables, stir-fried forest greens with garlic, and seasonal bamboo shoots.

Depending on availability, meals may also feature freshwater fish, frogs, or seafood brought in from the Cat Ba area.

Grouper, fresh fish salad, and other seafood dishes depend on what suppliers and local cooks have available that day.

Ask about portion sizes and prices before ordering, particularly for seafood charged by weight.

After lunch, a cup of warm nuoc voi (a traditional Vietnamese herbal leaf drink) or a coffee in a small garden makes for a pleasant break.

If you’re staying overnight, arrange dinner with your homestay in advance.

Restaurants serving daytime visitors may close early, and there aren’t many late-night dining options in the village.

Valley morning, back to Ben Beo

Wake up early for a walk or bicycle ride through the valley, have breakfast, and pack your belongings. Then take an electric cart to Viet Hai Pier and catch your prearranged boat back to Ben Beo.

You’ll arrive after several hours on the trail, spend the night resting in the village, and return to Cat Ba Town by boat the following day.

Best time to visit Viet Hai and what to do during stormy weather

Summer is a popular time for Vietnamese travelers to visit Cat Ba, while international visitors often explore Viet Hai between October and April.

Dry autumn days suit cycling and trekking.

Spring sometimes brings mist and drizzle, which can make the limestone trails damp and slippery.

From summer into early autumn, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and tropical storms can stop the boats.

The village relies on sea transport, so the weather decides whether you can leave as scheduled.

What happens when boats stop operating?

On August 23, 2026, Typhoon No. 4 affected transport around Cat Ba, and tourist boats, ferries, and other vessels were temporarily suspended.

More than 1,700 visitors remained on the island while local authorities implemented safety measures.

During a similar weather event, speedboat services between Viet Hai and Ben Beo may also be suspended.

Although the trekking trail connects Viet Hai with the rest of Cat Ba Island, it should not be treated as a safe emergency escape route during a storm.

Moss-covered rocks become dangerously slippery, streams may rise, and reaching injured hikers in the forest is difficult.

How to prepare for weather delays

Before entering Viet Hai, discuss a bad-weather plan with your accommodation.

Ask whether an additional night’s stay would be possible, what it would cost, and how your return boat booking would be handled if services were suspended.

Some accommodation providers, including Lan Homestay, publish policies allowing guests to reschedule boat transfers canceled because of weather or receive a refund.

These are individual provider policies, not universal rules applying to every boat operator or homestay.

During the storm season, leave an extra day in your itinerary, particularly before an international flight or another connection that’s difficult to change.

Always wear a properly fitted life jacket from boarding until your boat journey is complete.

Avoid vessels that don’t meet safety requirements, and never board when official storm warnings or sailing bans are in effect, even for a journey that normally takes just 15 minutes.

Things to check before booking your Viet Hai trip

Arrange your return journey when booking the trip into the village.

Don’t count on finding a boat back by turning up at the pier, particularly when staying overnight and leaving early the next morning.

Discuss luggage arrangements with your homestay.

Many properties can help coordinate pickups from Viet Hai Pier, but they need to know your arrival time and group size.

International visitors should share their booking details, expected arrival time, and any language assistance requirements.

Some accommodation providers communicate in English; for Korean, Mandarin Chinese, or Thai, ask beforehand.

Bring offline maps, a power bank, personal medication, and enough cash for your stay.

Mobile coverage in the village and along the jungle trail may be unreliable.

Once the boats in and out are booked, the rest is easy: cycling slowly past the fields, a simple meal, and the sound of the forest as evening settles over the valley.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from Cat Ba Town to Viet Hai Village?

Travel approximately 2 km from central Cat Ba Town to Ben Beo Pier, then take a speedboat or regular boat across Lan Ha Bay to Viet Hai Pier. A direct speedboat takes around 15 minutes, while a regular boat generally takes 30-45 minutes. From the pier, an electric cart reaches the village in about 8-10 minutes, or you can cycle there in approximately 20-30 minutes.

How much is the speedboat from Ben Beo to Viet Hai?

One homestay's 2026 reference price is USD 30 per trip for up to two passengers, plus USD 5 for each additional passenger. This isn't an official fixed price for every boat operator. You should also budget for the Lan Ha Bay entrance fee of VND 120,000 per adult, the electric cart fare of approximately VND 50,000 per person each way, and your return boat transfer.

Do you need to pay the Lan Ha Bay entrance fee to visit Viet Hai?

Yes. Tourists traveling to Viet Hai by boat through Lan Ha Bay should budget for the sightseeing fee. In 2026, it is VND 120,000 per adult and VND 60,000 for children aged six and above, while children under six are exempt. Some organized tours include this fee, so check your booking to avoid paying twice.

How long does it take to trek through Cat Ba National Park to Viet Hai?

The usual route through Ao Ech and Ang Phay takes around 4-5 hours, although slower groups may need 6-7 hours. The trail includes uneven limestone terrain, slippery rocks, and short steep sections. Wear proper hiking shoes, carry enough water, and arrange an experienced local guide. The national park entrance fee also applies.

Is it worth staying overnight in Viet Hai Village?

Yes, particularly if you enjoy quiet places, early-morning cycling, or want to rest after trekking. Staying overnight lets you experience the village after most cruise passengers have returned to their boats. However, accommodation is limited and weather can disrupt transfers, so book ahead, arrange your return transport, and allow some flexibility in your schedule.
