Where should you go in northern Vietnam with 5, 7, 10 or 14 days?
With 5-7 days, stick to Hanoi, Ninh Binh and one bay destination rather than trying to see all of Northern Vietnam. With 10-14 days, you can add Sapa or the Ha Giang Loop without spending every other day dragging your suitcase onto another bus.
A rower guides a small boat beneath the limestone cliffs of Trang An.
On Vietnam Railways’ timetable, train SE7 leaves Hanoi Railway Station at 6:00 AM and reaches Ninh Binh at approximately 8:16 AM. In just over two hours, you can swap Hanoi’s busy streets for limestone mountains and winding rivers. Adding Ha Long Bay, Sapa or Ha Giang takes a little more planning, though. With 5-7 days, three main destinations are enough; with 10 days, you can start exploring the mountains, while 14 days gives you room for the bays, lowlands and the Ha Giang Loop.
What’s the best order for a northern Vietnam itinerary?
Hanoi is the most convenient starting point for most travellers. International visitors usually fly into Noi Bai International Airport, while domestic travellers may arrive by train, plane or bus. From Hanoi, the main routes branch off towards the mountains, countryside and coast.
On a map, the five most popular destinations are spread across different directions:
- Hanoi: The main transport hub, worth spending 1-3 days exploring.
- Ninh Binh: South of Hanoi, approximately 1.5-2.5 hours away by road.
- Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba: East of Hanoi, where cruises depart for Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
- Sapa: Northwest of Hanoi, usually 5-7 hours away by road.
- Ha Giang: North of Hanoi, approximately 6-7 hours by bus to Ha Giang City, the starting point for the Ha Giang Loop.
Loading map…
- Hanoi: main transport hub
- Ninh Binh (Tam Coc): south, 1.5-2.5 hours by road
- Ha Long (Tuan Chau): east, cruise port
- Cat Ba: gateway to Lan Ha Bay
- Sapa: northwest, 5-7 hours by road
- Ha Giang: north, start of the Loop
A common mistake is returning to Hanoi after every destination. You visit Ninh Binh, travel back to Hanoi, head to Ha Long Bay the following morning, and then return to Hanoi again before catching a bus to Sapa.
That means extra hotel checkouts, waiting around for buses, finding pickup points and navigating traffic in the capital.
Direct buses connect Ninh Binh with Ha Long and Cat Ba. You can also travel directly from Sapa to Ninh Binh or Ha Giang. Hanoi doesn’t need to be your overnight stop between every destination.
Three routes worth considering
Short route, focusing on scenery and heritage:
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba → Hanoi.
This is the easiest option for first-time visitors, especially if you have less than a week. Transport connections are relatively straightforward, and there are no long journeys into the northern mountains.
10-day route, including Sapa:
Hanoi → Sapa → Ninh Binh → Cat Ba or Ha Long Bay → Hanoi.
The Sapa-Ninh Binh journey is long, but direct buses mean you don’t have to change vehicles in Hanoi. Plan to spend most of that day travelling.
14-day route, including the Ha Giang Loop:
Hanoi → Sapa → Ha Giang → Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba → Hanoi.
This keeps the two mountain destinations together before you head south to Ninh Binh and east towards the bay.
The Ha Giang Loop is a circular route starting and ending in Ha Giang City. It isn’t a one-way road trip from Sapa to Ninh Binh.
How long does it take to travel between destinations?
The table below gives approximate journey times for commonly used routes. These estimates don’t include unexpected traffic, long pickup delays or bad weather. For routes involving ferries and cruises, allow additional time for boarding.
| Route | Recommended transport | Estimated travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi → Ninh Binh | Limousine van, train | 1.5-2.5 hours by road; around 2 hours 10-20 minutes by train |
| Hanoi → Ha Long cruise port | Limousine van, cruise transfer | 2.5-3 hours |
| Hanoi → Cat Ba Town | Combined bus and ferry/boat ticket | 3-3.5 hours |
| Hanoi → Sapa | Sleeper bus, cabin bus, limousine van | 5-7 hours |
| Hanoi → Ha Giang | Cabin bus, limousine van | Around 6-7 hours |
| Ha Long → Ninh Binh | Limousine van, coach | 3-4.5 hours |
| Ninh Binh → Cat Ba | Combined bus and ferry transfer | 4.5-5 hours |
| Sapa → Ninh Binh | Direct sleeper or cabin bus | 8-9 hours |
| Sapa → Ha Giang | Direct coach or limousine van | Around 5.5-7 hours |
Amour Cruise’s published 2026 itinerary, for instance, lists boarding at approximately 12:00-12:10 PM in the Tuan Chau area, with the cruise ending around 11:45 AM-12:00 PM the following day.
Those are times for one specific operator, not a universal schedule for Ha Long cruises.
Before booking a bus from Ninh Binh to Ha Long, send the transport company your cruise name, departure port and required check-in time. A bus arriving in Bai Chay at 11:30 AM won’t work if your cruise expects you at Tuan Chau before then.
Northern Vietnam 5-day itinerary: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay
Five days is enough to experience three very different sides of Northern Vietnam: Hanoi’s old streets, Ninh Binh’s limestone countryside and an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay.
Don’t add Sapa or Ha Giang to this itinerary. A return journey between Hanoi and Sapa alone can involve 10-14 hours on the road, before accounting for waiting times or transfers to your accommodation.
5-day, 4-night itinerary
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi, explore Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter | Hanoi |
| 2 | Hanoi → Ninh Binh, visit Trang An or Tam Coc | Ninh Binh |
| 3 | Early transfer from Ninh Binh to Ha Long, board an overnight cruise | On the bay |
| 4 | Finish the cruise and return to Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 5 | Transfer to Noi Bai Airport and depart | - |
Day 1: Hanoi
After landing at Noi Bai Airport, head to your hotel in the Old Quarter or near Hoan Kiem Lake.
Spend the rest of the day wandering around Hang Gai Street, Hang Dao Street and the area near St. Joseph’s Cathedral. For dinner, try bun cha, grilled pork with noodles, or a bowl of Hanoi-style pho.
If your flight arrives in the afternoon, there’s no need to rush towards a museum or attraction with fixed opening hours. A walk around the lake or a water puppet performance is plenty for your first evening.
Day 2: Ninh Binh
One option is train SE7, scheduled to leave Hanoi Railway Station at 6:00 AM and arrive in Ninh Binh at approximately 8:16 AM.
From Ninh Binh Railway Station, take a taxi to Trang An or Tam Coc.
With just one day here, choose one boat route rather than trying to fit in both. If you still have energy in the afternoon, visit Hang Mua for its staircase climb and views over the surrounding countryside.
Stay overnight around Tam Coc or Trang An.
Day 3: Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay
This is the day that requires the most careful transport planning.
You need to leave Ninh Binh early enough to reach your cruise departure point around midday. Direct limousine transfers generally take 3-4.5 hours, depending on the pickup and drop-off locations.
Some operators offer very early departures. Confirm the actual departure time for your travel date, and check whether the vehicle can drop you at your cruise port rather than a general bus station.
An overnight cruise gives you the afternoon and the following morning on the bay, instead of a few hours between boarding and disembarking.
Days 4-5: return to Hanoi
After the cruise returns to port, travel back to Hanoi.
Spend your final night in the Old Quarter or somewhere convenient for reaching Noi Bai Airport. Day 5 is reserved for your departure flight.
This itinerary works best when you’ve secured a transfer that gets you to the cruise port on time. If the available buses don’t fit, reverse the route to Hanoi → Ha Long → Ninh Binh → Hanoi, or choose a day cruise rather than an overnight cruise.
Northern Vietnam 7-day itinerary: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Cat Ba
A week is a comfortable amount of time for two days in Hanoi, a visit to Ninh Binh and two nights on Cat Ba Island.
Among the different Northern Vietnam 7-day itineraries, this route offers a particularly good balance between sightseeing and downtime, especially for international visitors arriving in Vietnam for the first time.
7-day, 6-night itinerary
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi, explore the Old Quarter | Hanoi |
| 2 | Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake, local food and Hanoi at night | Hanoi |
| 3 | Hanoi → Ninh Binh, Trang An or Tam Coc | Ninh Binh |
| 4 | Ninh Binh → Cat Ba Island | Cat Ba |
| 5 | Lan Ha Bay boat trip, kayaking or Viet Hai Village | Cat Ba |
| 6 | Cat Ba → Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 7 | Fly home or continue travelling | - |
Days 1-2: Hanoi
Use your first day to get familiar with the city.
On the second day, choose the attractions that interest you most: the Temple of Literature, the Old Quarter, a museum, Hanoi Train Street or an evening water puppet performance.
Days 3-4: travel directly from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba
After spending a night in Ninh Binh, take a combined bus and ferry transfer to Cat Ba without returning to Hanoi.
The route normally passes through Hai Phong before connecting with a ferry service to the island.
In 2026, Cat Ba Outdoors listed Ninh Binh-Cat Ba transfers starting at VND 350,000 per person, with departures shown at 7:00 AM, 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM on its transport page.
The advertised journey takes approximately 4.5 hours, although traffic and ferry waiting times can make it longer.
A morning departure should get you to Cat Ba around lunchtime or early afternoon, leaving enough time to check in and walk along the waterfront.
Don’t schedule a full-day bay cruise immediately after arriving on the island.
Day 5: a full day on Lan Ha Bay
Use this day for a Lan Ha Bay cruise, kayaking or an itinerary that includes Viet Hai Village.
A full-day tour is usually a better choice when you want to spend time on the water rather than simply enjoy the views from the boat deck.
Cat Ba also has beaches, a national park and routes leading to Viet Hai Village. With three days and two nights on the island, choose one main activity instead of trying to see everything.
Days 6-7: return to Hanoi
Return to Hanoi using a combined bus and ferry ticket. Under favourable conditions, the journey takes around 3-3.5 hours.
It’s better to spend your final night in Hanoi if you have an international flight the following morning.
Cat Ba Express lists departures from Cat Ba to Hanoi at 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM.
Its advertised one-way fare starts at USD 13 per person.
Taking the 9:30 AM or 12:30 PM service leaves you with more of your final evening in Hanoi.
What if you prefer Ha Long Bay instead of Cat Ba?
Keep Days 1-3 in Hanoi and Ninh Binh, then continue to Ha Long instead of Cat Ba.
Board an overnight cruise on Day 4, return to Hanoi on Day 5, spend Day 6 exploring more of the capital and fly home on Day 7.
This option suits travellers who prefer sleeping aboard a cruise rather than staying in an island hotel.
Should you add Sapa to a seven-day trip? It’s technically possible to put Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long and Sapa into a very fast-paced itinerary. However, you would spend many hours travelling and have little time at each destination. For one week, three main areas are enough.
Northern Vietnam 10-day itinerary: add Sapa without returning to Hanoi
With ten days, you have enough time to include the activities that make the region special: walking through terraced rice fields, taking a boat through Ninh Binh, spending a few nights on an island and exploring Hanoi.
The route below takes you to Sapa first, then directly to Ninh Binh and Cat Ba.
10-day, 9-night itinerary
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi, explore the Old Quarter | Hanoi |
| 2 | Hanoi → Sapa | Sapa |
| 3 | Trekking or village visits around Sapa | Sapa |
| 4 | Direct bus from Sapa to Ninh Binh | Ninh Binh |
| 5 | Trang An, Tam Coc or Hang Mua | Ninh Binh |
| 6 | Ninh Binh → Cat Ba | Cat Ba |
| 7 | Lan Ha Bay cruise | Cat Ba |
| 8 | Cat Ba → Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 9 | Hanoi sightseeing, shopping and food | Hanoi |
| 10 | Airport transfer or onward journey | - |
Why visit Sapa first?
Sapa is considerably farther from Hanoi than Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay.
Going there early allows you to tackle the mountain journey while you’re still fresh, then gradually move towards shorter transfers and a slower pace.
On Day 2, take a sleeper bus, cabin bus or limousine van to Sapa. The journey normally takes 5-7 hours.
The overnight train from Hanoi doesn’t go all the way to Sapa. It stops at Lao Cai Railway Station, where you need another road transfer to reach town.
Spend Day 3 trekking through nearby villages or visiting a few places around the town centre.
Is the Sapa-Ninh Binh journey too long?
It is long. This is the most tiring journey in the ten-day itinerary.
Direct buses usually take around 8-9 hours, and some services may take longer.
This route has both daytime departures and overnight cabin buses. Some morning services depart around 6:10-7:00 AM and arriving in Ninh Binh during the afternoon.
Travelling by day means giving up most of a sightseeing day, but you’ll reach Ninh Binh in time to check into your accommodation.
An overnight bus can save one hotel night. However, arriving very early doesn’t guarantee that your room will be ready.
Avoid planning a Trang An boat tour on the same day you travel from Sapa. A late bus arrival could easily ruin the schedule.
Days 5-7: Ninh Binh and the bay
After a night’s rest, spend Day 5 exploring Ninh Binh.
Take a boat trip through Trang An or Tam Coc in the morning, then choose Hang Mua or an afternoon cycling around the countryside.
Day 6 is for travelling to Cat Ba, while Day 7 is dedicated to Lan Ha Bay.
Two nights on the island mean you won’t spend the entire visit watching the clock whenever you board a boat or return to your hotel.
If you prefer an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, travel from Ninh Binh to Ha Long on Day 6 instead.
Finish the cruise and return to Hanoi on Day 7. You can use the extra time for Hanoi or another night in Ninh Binh.
Can you do the Ha Giang Loop in a 10-day northern Vietnam trip?
Yes. Ten days is enough for a three-day, two-night Ha Giang Loop, provided you’re willing to leave Sapa out.
This itinerary suits travellers who enjoy mountains, winding passes and dramatic limestone scenery more than beach time.
10-day itinerary with the Ha Giang Loop
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 2 | Hanoi → Ha Giang City | Ha Giang |
| 3 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 1 | On the Loop |
| 4 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 2 | On the Loop |
| 5 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 3; return to Ha Giang City | Ha Giang |
| 6 | Ha Giang → Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 7 | Hanoi → Ninh Binh | Ninh Binh |
| 8 | Ninh Binh → Ha Long, board an overnight cruise | On the bay |
| 9 | Finish the cruise and return to Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 10 | Departure flight | - |
The Ha Giang Loop is commonly offered as a three-day, two-night or four-day, three-night tour, starting and ending in Ha Giang City.
Three days is a relatively short amount of time for a circuit through Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. Four days allows more stops and a less demanding riding schedule.
For a ten-day Northern Vietnam trip, the three-day tour fits more comfortably.
Spend the night in Ha Giang City after finishing the Loop on Day 5. There’s no need to add another long bus journey immediately after several days on mountain roads.
How much does the Ha Giang Loop cost in 2026?
Freedom Ha Giang Loop published the following Easy Rider prices:
| Freedom Ha Giang Loop tour | Easy Rider price per person |
|---|---|
| 3 days, 2 nights | VND 4,700,000 |
| 4 days, 3 nights | VND 5,700,000 |
An Easy Rider tour means a local driver operates the motorcycle while you ride as a passenger.
These prices are examples from one operator, not standard prices across all Ha Giang Loop tours.
Northern Vietnam 2-week itinerary: Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay
If you want to include all five major areas in one trip, 14 days is a reasonable starting point.
The itinerary below allocates four days to the Ha Giang Loop, two nights in Sapa, two nights in Ninh Binh and one night on a Ha Long Bay cruise.
Hanoi is your arrival point, a rest stop between the mountain and lowland sections, and your departure city.
14-day, 13-night itinerary
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at Noi Bai Airport, explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter | Hanoi |
| 2 | Hanoi → Sapa | Sapa |
| 3 | Trekking or sightseeing in Sapa | Sapa |
| 4 | Direct bus from Sapa to Ha Giang | Ha Giang |
| 5 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 1 | On the Loop |
| 6 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 2 | On the Loop |
| 7 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 3 | On the Loop |
| 8 | Ha Giang Loop, Day 4; return to Ha Giang City | Ha Giang |
| 9 | Ha Giang → Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 10 | Hanoi → Ninh Binh | Ninh Binh |
| 11 | Full day exploring Ninh Binh | Ninh Binh |
| 12 | Ninh Binh → Ha Long, overnight cruise | On the bay |
| 13 | Ha Long → Hanoi | Hanoi |
| 14 | Transfer to Noi Bai Airport | - |
Days 1-4: Hanoi, Sapa and the journey to Ha Giang
After spending your first night in Hanoi, travel to Sapa on Day 2.
Two nights here give you one day to reach the mountains and another for trekking or sightseeing.
On Day 4, look for a direct Sapa-Ha Giang bus instead of returning to Hanoi.
Bang Phan, Quang Nghi and other transport companies operate this route, with journeys generally taking around six hours.
A daytime departure is preferable if you want to arrive in Ha Giang City before dark, check into your accommodation and prepare your luggage for the Loop.
Before booking your tour, confirm exactly where the meeting point is. Some operators use offices that may be a considerable distance from the bus drop-off location.
Days 5-8: four days on the Ha Giang Loop
A typical route passes through Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, the Ma Pi Leng Pass area and Meo Vac before returning to Ha Giang City.
Depending on the operator, the tour may also include Lung Cu, Du Gia or other villages and viewpoints.
With four days, there’s more time for photographs, lunch stops and exploring without spending every hour rushing between destinations.
International travellers visiting Vietnam for the first time should check their motorcycle licence and insurance before choosing to self-ride.
Mountain roads can have sharp bends, fog, heavy rain and seasonal landslide risks.
Finish the Loop in Ha Giang City on Day 8 and stay overnight. Return to Hanoi the following morning.
Days 9-11: from Ha Giang to Ninh Binh
Take a limousine van or cabin bus back to Hanoi on Day 9.
This is a travel and rest day.
Head to Ninh Binh on Day 10, then spend Day 11 exploring Trang An, Tam Coc, Hang Mua or the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.
Staying in Tam Coc gives you easy access to restaurants, bicycle rides and evening walks. The Trang An area may appeal more if you prefer quieter surroundings.
Two nights in Ninh Binh feel much more relaxed than stopping for a few hours.
An afternoon cycling beside rice fields deserves some time of its own. You don’t need to add another ticketed attraction just to fill every gap in the itinerary.
Days 12-14: Ha Long Bay and back to Hanoi
On Day 12, take a direct transfer from Ninh Binh to Ha Long and board your overnight cruise.
After spending the night on the bay, return to Hanoi on Day 13 and fly out on Day 14.
This lighter ending gives you a useful buffer after the longer journeys around Ha Giang.
To stay on Cat Ba instead of Ha Long Bay, use Days 12-13 for Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay, although the visit will be short.
Travellers who want to kayak, cycle to Viet Hai Village or spend time on the beaches should consider reducing the Ha Giang Loop to three days and adding another night on Cat Ba.
Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay: which should you choose?
Both areas are known for limestone islands rising above the water, but the travel experience can be quite different.
Choose Ha Long Bay for an overnight cruise
Ha Long Bay is a good option if you want a two-day, one-night cruise with a cabin onboard, meals and an organised activity schedule.
Cruise operators commonly use the Tuan Chau area or Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay.
Always check the exact port printed on your booking confirmation.
Choose Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay for island life
Cat Ba works particularly well as a three-day, two-night visit.
You can spend one day reaching the island, another on Lan Ha Bay and the final day returning or exploring a little more.
Stay in a hotel around Cat Ba Town, take a boat trip into Lan Ha Bay, then return to the island for dinner.
If you’re interested in beaches or forest trails, add another day.
Do you need to visit both Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay?
For a trip lasting 5-10 days, usually not.
Both areas are known for limestone seascapes. Travelling between ports, checking out of hotels, taking ferries and checking in again can consume more time than expected.
With more than two weeks, it’s easier to dedicate one night to a Ha Long Bay cruise and two nights to Cat Ba.
If you want to connect the two areas, the Tuan Chau-Gia Luan ferry links the Ha Long side with Cat Ba Island. From Gia Luan, you still need road transport to reach Cat Ba Town.
Ferry schedules vary by season, day and operating conditions. Don’t rely on one fixed timetable when arranging connections that leave little room for delays.
How many nights should you spend in Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Giang?
Not every destination needs the same amount of time.
Ninh Binh: One day is enough for a boat ride and another nearby attraction. Two days are better if you want to include Hang Mua, Hoa Lu, Bich Dong or some relaxed cycling.
Sapa: Plan at least two nights when travelling from Hanoi. If you enjoy longer treks between villages, consider three nights.
Ha Giang: Three days and two nights is the duration of a short Loop tour, not the ideal total time needed from Hanoi. Including travel to and from Ha Giang City, allow approximately five to six days for a less rushed experience.
Hanoi: One full day gives you enough time to walk around the Old Quarter and sample a few local dishes. Two or three days are better for first-time visitors who want to explore Train Street, see a water puppet performance, visit museums and wander beyond the central tourist streets.
How should you adjust the itinerary when travelling with children?
An itinerary that suits adults who enjoy trekking may not work particularly well for a family with young children.
For families, the seven-day Hanoi-Ninh Binh-Cat Ba route is often easier to manage than an itinerary connecting Sapa and Ha Giang.
Consider two nights in Hanoi, two in Ninh Binh and two on Cat Ba Island. This reduces the number of hotel checkouts and long transfers.
In Hanoi, a water puppet show can be a good evening activity, but choose a performance that fits around your child’s dinner and bedtime.
On rainy days, a museum or indoor attraction may be a better choice than walking around the Old Quarter.
Booking a Ha Long Bay cruise? Ask about child-sized life jackets, cabin arrangements, extra beds, minimum age requirements for kayaking and other onboard activities.
A motorcycle-based Ha Giang Loop is not a relaxed option for small children. Families can still explore parts of the Dong Van Karst Plateau by car, but the itinerary needs to account for breaks, road conditions and motion sickness.
A five-to-seven-hour transfer may seem manageable for adults, but it can feel extremely long with children.
Leaving an afternoon free can be much more useful than adding another stop.
What’s the best time of year for a northern Vietnam trip?
There isn’t one month when Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh and the bays are guaranteed to have perfect weather at the same time.
Spring and autumn are generally more comfortable for itineraries covering several regions, but the weather in the mountains can be very different from conditions on the coast.
Spring: March to April
March and April often bring relatively pleasant temperatures to Hanoi and Ninh Binh, making outdoor activities more comfortable.
Sapa and Ha Giang can still be foggy, particularly in the early morning.
On the bays, cloudy days and limited visibility are possible even when the weather is mild.
Summer: May to August
Northern Vietnam is generally hot and rainy during this period.
Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay can be affected by tropical storms or typhoons. Cruises may be rescheduled or suspended when local authorities restrict boat operations.
Heavy rain can also affect mountain roads in Sapa and Ha Giang, with risks including slippery surfaces and landslides.
If your itinerary includes the Ha Giang Loop, leave some flexibility rather than booking a tight connection immediately after the tour finishes.
Autumn: September to November
September through November is popular with travellers looking for more comfortable weather and autumn landscapes in Northern Vietnam.
However, rice-harvest seasons in Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and other terraced farming areas don’t occur at exactly the same time.
The best viewing period can change from year to year.
Winter: December to February
December through February can be cold in Sapa and Ha Giang.
Fog, chilly rain and poor visibility may affect mountain viewpoints and outdoor activities.
For a first trip to Northern Vietnam during winter, a flexible itinerary is better than a tightly fixed schedule.
Where should you go if you have another 3-7 days?
With 17-21 days in Northern Vietnam, you can explore one region more deeply rather than simply collecting more destinations.
For more mountain roads and dramatic scenery
Consider adding Cao Bang or Ba Be Lake in the northeast.
Cao Bang is known for its mountain roads, Ban Gioc Waterfall and borderland landscapes.
Ba Be Lake is better suited to travellers looking for boat trips, homestays and a slower pace after Ha Giang.
Neither destination works particularly well as a quick stop squeezed between two long bus journeys.
For rice terraces and rural villages
Mu Cang Chai is worth considering if you want to see terraced rice fields, particularly around the harvest season.
Mai Chau, Pu Luong and Moc Chau can form a separate route southwest of Hanoi if you prefer mountain scenery, gentle walks and relaxing in rural accommodation.
Don’t automatically add these places to a Sapa-Ha Giang itinerary simply because they’re all in Northern Vietnam.
They’re in different directions, and combining every mountain destination can turn much of your holiday into long days on the road.
For another coastal city
Hai Phong is a convenient addition when you’re travelling to Cat Ba and want to explore local food or spend a night in the city before heading to the island.
Two days and one night are enough to sample banh da cua, Hai Phong’s crab noodle soup, try the city’s small spicy baguettes and explore the central streets.
For travelling south into central Vietnam
If you’re travelling across Vietnam, you don’t necessarily need to return to Hanoi after visiting Ninh Binh.
You can continue south on the North-South railway towards Hue or Da Nang, then travel onwards to Hoi An.
The Ninh Binh-Hoi An journey usually involves combining a train or long-distance bus with a further road transfer, since Hoi An doesn’t have its own railway station.
What should you confirm before booking your northern Vietnam itinerary?
You don’t need reservations for every restaurant or small activity, but there are a few parts of the journey worth locking in early.
First, your flight dates and final overnight stop. For international travellers, spending the last night in Hanoi is generally safer than attempting to reach Noi Bai Airport directly from Cat Ba, Ha Long or Ha Giang on departure day.
Second, your cruise boarding time. Make sure your transfer matches the correct cruise port and check-in schedule. Check whether the cruise price already includes transport from Hanoi so you don’t accidentally book and pay for the transfer twice.
Third, long-distance bus connections. Confirm departure times, vehicle types and pickup and drop-off points for Sapa-Ninh Binh, Sapa-Ha Giang and Ha Giang-Hanoi. A bus advertised as a cabin sleeper doesn’t necessarily offer identical private cabins for every ticket category.
Fourth, entry requirements. International visitors should check whether their nationality qualifies for visa exemption or whether they need a Vietnamese visa or e-visa. Do this before confirming flights, particularly for trips lasting two or three weeks.
Finally, mobile data and payments. Arrange a SIM or eSIM that works in Vietnam, carry some cash and check which payment methods your hotels, bus operators and mountain homestays accept.
Where can you confirm your transport before departure?
If you’re travelling to Cat Ba, you can contact Cat Ba Express at 214 Tran Quang Khai Street, Hanoi, phone +84 97 695 1999, to confirm bus departures and pickup locations. Before paying for any connection, check how the scheduled arrival fits with your hotel check-in, cruise boarding time or onward flight. Those details determine whether your itinerary will actually work.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I go with seven days in Northern Vietnam?
Choose Hanoi, Ninh Binh and either Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba. Spend two days in Hanoi, a day exploring Ninh Binh, around two days near the bay and the remaining time travelling, resting or reaching the airport. Avoid adding both Sapa and the Ha Giang Loop to a one-week trip.
What's the best order for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa?
A practical route is Hanoi → Sapa → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Hanoi. Direct buses between Sapa and Ninh Binh take approximately 8-9 hours, while Ninh Binh to Ha Long takes around 3-4.5 hours. This reduces unnecessary journeys through Hanoi, although you should reserve most of a day for the Sapa-Ninh Binh transfer.
Can I do the Ha Giang Loop with only ten days in Northern Vietnam?
Yes. Allow approximately three days and two nights for the Loop itself, plus additional time travelling to and from Ha Giang City. You can combine Hanoi, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay in ten days. Leaving out Sapa makes the schedule more manageable, particularly on your first visit.
Are two weeks enough for both Sapa and Ha Giang?
Yes. A 14-day trip can include two nights in Sapa, a direct transfer to Ha Giang and a four-day, three-night Ha Giang Loop. The remaining days can cover Hanoi, Ninh Binh and an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise. This is still a fairly full itinerary, not a slow holiday.
Do I need to hire a private driver to travel around Northern Vietnam?
No. The main routes are served by limousine vans, coaches, sleeper buses and trains. Direct services also connect Ninh Binh with Ha Long and Cat Ba. Private transport is useful for families, larger groups or travellers who need flexible stops, but it isn't necessary for the entire trip. For the Ha Giang Loop, choose a transport option that matches your riding experience and legal licence requirements.
