Where should you stay in Hanoi before heading to the coast?
Before booking a Hanoi hotel, find out where you need to be the next morning: a Cat Ba bus pickup, the railway station or Noi Bai Airport. This guide helps you choose a neighbourhood around that departure, then compare rooms, prices and access.
Turtle Tower on its grassy islet in Hoan Kiem Lake, with lakeside trees and central Hanoi's taller buildings behind.
An Old Quarter hotel near Hang Bac works well for an evening on foot followed by a morning bus to Cat Ba. A hotel around Ly Thuong Kiet, south of Hoan Kiem Lake, may suit you better if you want central sightseeing with less time squeezing through narrow streets. For a first visit of a few nights, start with those two areas; look farther out when your itinerary gives you a reason.
Where to stay in Hanoi: start with your daily plans
The best area to stay in Hanoi depends on what you will do repeatedly. Walking around Hoan Kiem Lake, travelling to meetings in Cau Giay and catching an early flight are three different trips, even if each involves only two hotel nights.
The distances below are approximate road distances from the Hoan Kiem Lake area to a named landmark. Your hotel may be closer or farther away, and one-way streets can make a taxi journey longer than the walking route.
| Area | Approximate distance from Hoan Kiem Lake | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Quarter and lake surroundings | Central; varies by street | First visits, walking, onward buses to Cat Ba or Ha Long | Weekend road closures, nightlife noise and the actual pickup point |
| French Quarter, south and southeast of the lake | About 1 km to the Opera House | Couples, families and travellers wanting central hotels with more facilities | Vehicle access on the specific street, especially near pedestrian zones |
| Ba Dinh and Truc Bach | About 2.8 km to the mausoleum area; 3.4 km to Truc Bach Lake | Visits focused on Ba Dinh, stays of several nights | Room orientation and traffic noise |
| Tay Ho, around Xuan Dieu and Quang An | About 6.4 km | Families, longer stays and time spent at the hotel | Daily journeys into the historic centre |
| Hanoi Railway Station, Le Duan side | About 1.8 km | An overnight stay before a train to Hai Phong | Departure station, station entrance and railway noise |
| Long Bien | About 5.5 km to Gia Lam bus station; 8 km to Vincom Plaza Long Bien | Visiting people or using a confirmed pickup east of the river | Bridge crossings and the precise location |
| Cau Giay and My Dinh | About 8.7 km to Duy Tan; 9.4 km to My Dinh bus station | Work trips or departures from western Hanoi | Rush-hour travel to the lake |
| Near Noi Bai Airport | About 27 km | Late arrivals and early flights | Shuttle hours, terminal and total transfer cost |
For two nights in Hanoi before heading to the coast, changing hotels usually adds work without much benefit. A room where you can sleep comfortably and meet your onward transport is often enough.
The Old Quarter: the easiest starting point for a first visit
Staying in Hanoi’s Old Quarter puts food, cafés and the lake within a compact area. You can go out for breakfast, return for a break and head out again without arranging transport each time. Hotels accustomed to international visitors can also help with luggage storage and onward bookings.
The important distinction is between individual rooms, not just streets.
A front-facing room above a late-night business can feel very different from a rear room in the same building. A narrow lane may have little traffic but still carry noise from restaurants, conversations and deliveries. “Central location” tells you where you are; it says little about how you will sleep.
If meeting other travellers is part of the plan, Mad Monkey Hanoi at 9 Ma May is one option. It describes itself as a social hostel, runs evening activities and currently accepts guests aged 18 and over. The One Hostel & Rooftop Pool Hanoi at 70 Hang Ma also promotes a party atmosphere and has a rooftop pool.
Those features can be a good match for a solo traveller looking for company. They are less useful when you have children or need to wake before dawn.
For a quieter stay, read recent reviews for comments about music, corridors and soundproofing. Ask for a rear-facing room away from the bar and lift before paying a non-refundable rate. A high floor is not necessarily quieter if the bar is on the roof.
Can a taxi reach an Old Quarter hotel at the weekend?
The usual pedestrian schedule around Hoan Kiem Lake runs from 7 pm on Friday until midnight on Sunday. Pedestrian streets and the night-market area within the Old Quarter generally operate from 7 pm to midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
These are different areas with different schedules.
During the low-emission-zone pilot from 1 July to 31 December 2026, the designated Area 1 also restricts cars and motorcycles between 7 pm and midnight on those three evenings. That evening rule does not mean roads immediately around the lake are open to taxis throughout Saturday and Sunday daytime.
With a pushchair and two large suitcases, a hotel outside the closed section may be more convenient than one directly beside the lake. Holiday arrangements can change, so get an answer for your actual date.
The French Quarter: central sightseeing with more hotel options for families
The area around the Opera House, Ngo Quyen, Ly Thuong Kiet and Tran Hung Dao is worth considering if you want to remain near the lake without staying among the busiest shopping lanes.
From the Opera House area, Hoan Kiem Lake is roughly 1 km away by road. That makes it practical to return to your room between outings, particularly when a child needs an afternoon nap.
You can look here for larger hotels with restaurants, pools and connecting-room options. These facilities are more useful than a decorative lobby if you expect to spend part of each day at the hotel.
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, at 15 Ngo Quyen, Hoan Kiem Ward, is a prominent five-star example. The property has 358 rooms and suites, including accommodation in its historic Heritage Wing. If a particular wing is the reason you are booking, make sure it appears in the room description and confirmation.
“French Quarter” is a neighbourhood description, not an administrative ward. A hotel in this area may have Hoan Kiem in its address rather than Cua Nam.
Wider streets also do not guarantee unrestricted vehicle access. For properties near the pedestrian-zone boundary, ask which entrance your driver can use at the time you arrive.
Ba Dinh, Truc Bach and West Lake: useful alternatives for a longer stay
Ba Dinh and Truc Bach for sightseeing by neighbourhood
If you plan to visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area, Ba Dinh Square and Truc Bach, sleeping nearby reduces the need to travel from the Old Quarter before you begin.
The reference road distance from Hoan Kiem Lake is about 2.8 km to the mausoleum area and 3.4 km to Truc Bach Lake. You are outside the immediate Old Quarter walking circuit, but still reasonably close to central sights.
This works particularly well when you group your plans: one day around Ba Dinh and Truc Bach, another around Hoan Kiem. It is less convenient if you expect to return to the Old Quarter several times every day.
Check the room’s position carefully. A lake-area address can still mean a window facing a busy road. Ask about traffic noise rather than assuming a quieter neighbourhood guarantees a quiet room.
West Lake for families and time spent at your accommodation
Around Xuan Dieu, Quang An and Tu Hoa, you can consider hotels and serviced apartments with more living space. For a family staying several nights, separate bedrooms, laundry facilities or a kitchen may matter more than being able to walk to the lake in the historic centre.
InterContinental Hanoi Westlake, at 05 Tu Hoa, Tay Ho Ward, is an example of a hotel chosen partly for its lakeside setting.
The trade-off is distance. From this part of West Lake, Hoan Kiem Lake is roughly 6 km or more away, depending on the address and route. A midday return for a child’s nap adds another journey.
West Lake makes sense when you want to spend time in the neighbourhood and at the hotel. If every morning starts with a tour pickup in the Old Quarter, the extra transfer becomes a daily chore.
For children, check pool opening dates and hours, depth, extra-bed arrangements and breakfast charges. A “family-friendly” label does not answer those questions.
When to stay near Hanoi Railway Station, Long Bien or My Dinh
Near Hanoi Railway Station: useful before a train to Hai Phong
Open your train booking before choosing a hotel. Hanoi Railway Station at 120 Le Duan and Long Bien Station are different departure points. Follow the station printed on your ticket.
Accommodation near the Le Duan entrance to Hanoi Railway Station can work well for a short overnight stop. The station is about 1.8 km from the Hoan Kiem Lake reference point, so staying nearby does not put you far outside central Hanoi.
Check the walking route to the correct entrance, not just the hotel’s claim to be “near the station”. Ask about early checkout and noise from the road or railway. If you will arrive late from Hai Phong, tell reception when to expect you.
Long Bien: choose it for a specific reason
Long Bien covers a large area. Accommodation near Gia Lam bus station and accommodation near Vincom Plaza Long Bien can produce quite different journeys.
Stay here if you are visiting someone, have work nearby or have confirmed a convenient pickup east of the Red River. For a first visit focused on the Old Quarter, repeated bridge crossings are an extra consideration.
Also distinguish Long Bien railway station, beside the Old Quarter on the central side of the river, from accommodation across the river in the wider Long Bien area. The shared name can be misleading when booking quickly.
Cau Giay and My Dinh: practical for work and western departures
A hotel near Duy Tan is sensible when your meetings are there. A hotel near My Dinh bus station is sensible when your ticket actually departs from that station.
Neither is the obvious first choice for two days spent exploring the lake and Old Quarter. The reference road distances are about 8.7 km from Duy Tan and 9.4 km from My Dinh bus station to Hoan Kiem Lake.
Before choosing a cheaper room farther west, add the likely cost of return transport and consider when you will travel. A lower room rate is less appealing if you spend your limited sightseeing time on the road.
Hanoi room prices in 2026: compare like with like
Prices displayed before travel dates are entered, and citywide averages, are planning references. They are not guaranteed quotes for your stay.
| Accommodation type | Published 2026 reference | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel bed | Mad Monkey Hanoi’s website displayed about US$9.62 per bed per night in a standard 12-bed dorm and US$11.93 in a standard six-bed dorm | These are bed prices, not private-room prices; enter your dates |
| Three-star hotel | A Hanoi average of about US$35 per night | A citywide average, not a price promised by every Old Quarter hotel |
| Four-star hotel | An average of about US$62 per night | A starting point for comparing mid-range accommodation |
| Boutique hotel | No separate standard price category | Compare the actual property, room size, facilities and cancellation terms |
| Five-star hotel | An average of about US$135 per night | Do not treat this as the quoted rate for the Metropole or InterContinental |
“Boutique” describes a hotel’s character and scale more than a consistent level of facilities. La Siesta Classic Ma May, at 94 Ma May, is one property to investigate if you want a boutique hotel in the Old Quarter. Compare its available room with other rooms for the same dates.
Pay attention to windows, floor area and bed configuration. An attractive photograph of the hotel does not establish what the cheapest room includes.
Citywide averages are also poor spending limits for a particular busy weekend. Lower-priced rooms may already be sold, and a family room can cost substantially more than a standard double.
Before comparing two totals, check the number of guests, taxes, breakfast and cancellation deadline. Enter children’s ages at the start of the search. A room for two adults is not automatically suitable for a family because the bed looks large.
Before Cat Ba, Ha Long or Hai Phong: book around the actual departure
For a Cat Ba Express journey, the Old Quarter is a useful place to start your hotel search. The operator advertises free hotel pickup within its Old Quarter service area. Travellers outside that area can use its office at 214 Tran Quang Khai; the Hanoi-to-Cat-Ba route page asks passengers using the office to arrive 20 minutes before departure.
Still send your exact hotel address before relying on pickup. A narrow lane, road restriction or vehicle assignment can change where you meet the driver.
During the July-December 2026 pilot, relevant fossil-fuel passenger vehicles with more than 16 seats face restrictions in Area 2 between 6-9 am and 4-7:30 pm daily, subject to specified exceptions. Transfer points are designated on Ba Trieu, Tran Nhat Duat, Tran Quang Khai and Tran Khanh Du. Smaller vehicles are not automatically covered by the same restriction.
Before departure day, get written confirmation of the pickup address, meeting time and contact number. If you are heading to Ha Long for a cruise, provide the boat or port name as well. A drop-off somewhere in Ha Long is not necessarily your cruise check-in point.
For Hai Phong by rail, choose your overnight location around the station on the ticket. For a road service, use that operator’s pickup address. There is little reason to book beside a railway station if you ultimately leave from a bus office elsewhere.
Should you stay near Noi Bai Airport before an early flight?
Yes, if the final night is mainly for sleeping and you need to reach the airport very early.
After returning from Cat Ba or Ha Long, travelling directly to an airport-area hotel can be more practical than going into the Old Quarter and leaving again a few hours later.
If you still have an afternoon and evening to enjoy Hanoi, staying centrally remains an option. Arrange the airport transfer in advance and work backwards from your airline’s requested airport arrival time, allowing for the road journey and a buffer.
The road distance from Hoan Kiem Lake to Noi Bai is approximately 27 km. A fast journey in clear traffic is not a dependable basis for a tight flight connection.
Check the direction before using an airport-bus timetable
Bus 86 between the airport and Hanoi Railway Station costs VND50,000 per journey and runs about every 25-30 minutes. Its service window is published two ways, 7 am-10:05 pm and 5:15 am-10:10 pm.
Neither window, on its own, establishes the first departure from your particular city stop.
For an early flight, confirm the direction and boarding point with the operator. Otherwise, arrange a car rather than building the morning around an assumed bus departure.
Choose an airport hotel by its transfer arrangements
Noi Bai Airport Hotel, Dragon Airport Hotel and Fiorus Airport Hotel are names to investigate. Confirm the total room-and-transfer price, whether reception will be available when you arrive, and whether transport runs at the hour you need.
A short distance on the map does not establish a comfortable walking route with luggage. “Airport shuttle” also does not necessarily mean a free, round-the-clock service.
For accommodation inside the terminal buildings, VATC SleepPod operates on the third floor of the public area in T1 and the second floor of the public area in T2. These are landside public areas, not accommodation beyond security.
VATC’s 2026 policy lists a midnight-6 am surcharge for certain walk-in and hourly stays: VND500,000 per room during 1 November-4 May, or VND300,000 during 5 May-31 October. It states that the surcharge does not apply to overnight or full-day package bookings. Ask for the total for your exact hours before comparing it with an outside hotel.
Before paying: confirm the address, booking channel and check-in documents
An old ward name does not automatically mean a wrong address
Following the administrative changes from July 2025, some hotels use new ward names while booking platforms retain older addresses.
The Metropole’s official address uses Hoan Kiem Ward; InterContinental Westlake uses Tay Ho Ward. Match the hotel name, street number, street name and map pin, rather than relying on the ward or former district alone.
Save the Vietnamese address with your confirmation. If a hotel has several branches, check that every document refers to the same one.
Verify the payment request
A fake page can copy a real hotel’s photographs, logo and name. An unusually cheap offer, pressure to transfer immediately or a claim that you must pay again to fix a transaction should prompt a pause.
For a direct booking, call a number obtained independently from the hotel’s official website and confirm the reservation and receiving account. A personal account needs explicit confirmation from the accommodation provider; the account name alone is not conclusive.
When booking through a platform, keep communication and payment within its normal process. Save the confirmation, cancellation conditions and receipt.
Bring your passport for check-in
Foreign guests should bring their original passport and have relevant visa or entry documentation available if requested. The accommodation provider is responsible for temporary-residence reporting, including for a one-night stay.
This also matters with apartments and self-check-in accommodation. Ask who will collect the necessary information and complete the reporting.
Rules effective from 24 July 2026 require the responsible person to report when the foreign guest arrives. You should not normally need to visit the police yourself as part of a standard hotel check-in.
Ask for your passport back once the checks are finished. Avoid leaving it as security for a rental or deposit; request another deposit arrangement where needed. Vietnamese guests should carry valid identification, and families should confirm the documents required for children before arrival.
For an Old Quarter arrival, keep 7 pm on Friday in mind: have your confirmed drop-off point saved before the weekend pedestrian arrangements begin. The taxi barrier is an awkward place to start finding a route with suitcases.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Hanoi on a first visit?
Start with the Old Quarter or the French Quarter near Hoan Kiem Lake. The Old Quarter is convenient for walking, food and many onward bus pickups. The French Quarter suits travellers looking for central hotels with more space or facilities.
Is the Old Quarter better than the French Quarter?
Choose the Old Quarter if you want busy streets, food and cafés close to your door. Consider the French Quarter if you prefer a larger hotel or are travelling with children. In both areas, check the specific room and weekend vehicle access.
Where should families with young children stay?
The French Quarter works well for sightseeing around Hoan Kiem Lake. West Lake is worth considering for apartments, more living space and time spent at the accommodation. Check extra beds, lifts, pool arrangements and children’s breakfast charges before booking.
Is Hanoi’s Old Quarter noisy at weekends?
Some sections are busy and noisy, particularly near bars, the night market and performances. Rooms vary considerably, even within one hotel. Look for recent soundproofing comments and ask for a room away from nightlife; a road closed to traffic can still be lively.
Is an airport hotel worthwhile for an early Noi Bai flight?
It can be, especially after a late arrival or when you have no remaining plans in central Hanoi. Confirm a transfer to the correct terminal at the required hour. If you stay in town, arrange transport beforehand and follow your airline’s airport arrival guidance.
