Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: getting from the Old Quarter to your cruise
Allow around three hours for the road journey from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, plus any pickup time and delays. Before choosing a bus, check your cruise confirmation for the exact port and arrival deadline.
Cruise and tour boats settle among the limestone islands as the sky over Ha Long Bay turns orange at dusk.
If you are staying in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and heading to Ha Long Bay for a cruise, ask your cruise operator about its transfer service first. Then compare that offer with a shared limousine van or private car. Arriving at Noi Bai Airport? You can travel straight to Ha Long without going into Hanoi, but you still need to establish whether your boat leaves from Tuan Chau or Bai Chay before booking the ride.
How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?
The road distance depends on where you start and, more importantly, where you need to finish.
These approximate distances use the Hoan Kiem Lake area as the starting point:
| Destination | Approximate road distance |
|---|---|
| Tuan Chau International Passenger Port | 146 km |
| Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay | 153 km |
| Hon Gai clock tower area | 159 km |
Most journeys from central Hanoi follow the Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway, then continue towards Ha Long across Bach Dang Bridge.
In favourable conditions, the drive takes around 2.5-3 hours. Shared services may take longer because they collect passengers at several stops or include a rest break. Some published bus schedules allow more than three hours.
For a transfer booked independently of the cruise, aiming to arrive at least 45-60 minutes before the required check-in time gives you a more workable margin. Busy weekends and holidays may call for more time. If the connection is tighter, ask the cruise operator to confirm that it works.
Check the port before you book the vehicle
Tuan Chau International Passenger Port and Ha Long International Cruise Port are separate places, roughly 12 km apart.
| Name to use when booking | Location | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Tuan Chau International Passenger Port | Tuan Chau Ward | Cruise company, lounge address and meeting point |
| Ha Long International Cruise Port | Bai Chay Ward | Terminal, lounge or check-in counter |
| Another port named on your booking | Possibly Hon Gai or another area | The exact address supplied by your cruise operator |
Many overnight cruises use Tuan Chau. Ha Long International Cruise Port is in the central Bai Chay tourism area. However, the type of cruise alone does not tell you which port to use.
Send the transport provider your cruise confirmation and ask it to put the agreed drop-off point in writing. The lounge name or address is useful here: reaching a large port and reaching your cruise check-in desk are two different parts of the journey.
Quang Ninh became a centrally governed municipality on 1 September 2026. Transport listings may still use older administrative addresses or the familiar route name “Ha Long-Quang Ninh.” For finding your boat, the full port name and the location sent by the cruise operator matter more than the wording of the wider address.
Cruise-company transfers: the first option to check
If this is your first visit to Vietnam, a transfer arranged through your cruise operator reduces the number of connections you have to organise yourself. The pickup schedule is planned around the sailing, and you have a clear contact if you cannot find the driver or lounge.
Whether transport is included depends on the package and booking channel.
For example, Bhaya Cruises states that bookings made directly through its website include a shared limousine return transfer between Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. Its current FAQ lists embarkation at noon and disembarkation at 10 a.m. for Bhaya Soul, The Au Co and Bhaya Classic.
That is a useful reminder to check your own booking. An older itinerary showing a 12:30 p.m. departure, or another cruise company’s late-morning return, may not fit your sailing.
Before buying a separate bus ticket, confirm:
- Whether your particular cruise package includes the transfer.
- Whether pickup is at your hotel or a meeting point.
- The pickup time and exact cruise lounge.
- The Hanoi drop-off point and expected return time.
“Old Quarter pickup” does not guarantee that the vehicle can reach every hotel entrance. A property in a narrow lane or an area with vehicle restrictions may require a short walk to a meeting point.
Send your hotel address when arranging the transfer. Having a confirmed street address makes the morning easier than trying to explain where you are while carrying luggage.
Shared limousine vans from Hanoi to Ha Long
In Vietnamese transport listings, a “limousine” usually means a van or minibus fitted with larger, more comfortable seats. It is generally a shared service unless you book the whole vehicle.
These services suit travellers who want to arrange transport separately from the cruise. Start by checking the destination, then compare the pickup point, departure time and seat options.
Central Hanoi pickup points with port drop-off
The following are 2026 reference fares. Prices are per person, one way. Select your travel date to confirm availability and the final fare.
| Operator | Hanoi pickup point | Reference departure time | Drop-off | 2026 fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ha Thanh Travel | Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien | 7 a.m. | Tuan Chau Port | VND 290,000 |
| Le Phan Travel | Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien | 8 a.m. | Ha Long International Cruise Port | VND 290,000 |
| Cuong Phat Limousine | 6 Tong Dan | 8-8:30 a.m. | Ha Long International Cruise Port | VND 270,000 |
| VietNam Explore | 162A Tran Quang Khai | Selected departures between 6 and 8 a.m. | Ha Long or Tuan Chau port, depending on the service | Standard seat VND 280,500; limousine VND 340,000 |
| Thanh An Limousine | Around 1 Thanh Nien, Pan Pacific | 8-8:20 a.m. | Tuan Chau overnight cruise harbour | VND 240,000 |
These are named meeting points around central Hanoi. They are not all inside the Old Quarter, and the listing does not automatically mean hotel collection is included.
The Opera House and Tong Dan are convenient for many hotels south of Hoan Kiem Lake. Pan Pacific is farther north, near Truc Bach Lake and West Lake. Check the journey from your hotel before choosing a slightly cheaper ticket.
For a direct transfer to Tuan Chau, Ha Thanh Travel, VietNam Explore and Thanh An are useful options to investigate from this list. With VietNam Explore, make sure you select the service for Tuan Chau rather than its Bai Chay port drop-off.
Morning departures around 7-8 a.m. may suit cruises checking in late morning or around noon. They cannot get you to a cruise lounge in Ha Long for an 8 a.m. check-in.
Departures from other Hanoi neighbourhoods
If you are staying around Cau Giay, My Dinh, Long Bien or Minh Khai, travelling into the Old Quarter may add an unnecessary leg.
Reference fares for 2026 included Phuc Xuyen at VND 280,000 for a standard seat or VND 310,000 for a limousine seat, Ha Lan at VND 320,000, and Anh Huy VIP at VND 325,000 per person, one way.
Listed pickup locations included Phuc Xuyen offices in Long Bien and on Duong Dinh Nghe, Ha Lan at 154 Trung Kinh, and Anh Huy VIP at 226 Minh Khai. Check the drop-off for the individual departure; a ticket to Ha Long does not establish that it reaches your cruise port.
A booking app only sells the ticket. The named transport company operates the vehicle. Save the operator’s name, your pickup address in Vietnamese and the contact number on the confirmation, so you know whom to call if you cannot find the stop.
Coaches from My Dinh: useful if you are staying in western Hanoi
A coach can make sense if your accommodation is near My Dinh and you have plenty of time before boarding your boat.
From the Old Quarter, compare the total cost. A cheaper coach ticket may also require a ride across Hanoi and another taxi from the arrival bus station to the port.
Selected 2026 schedules and fares include:
| Operator | Pickup | Reference departure times | Drop-off | One-way fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dao Thanh | My Dinh Bus Station | 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. | Bai Chay Bus Station | VND 170,000 |
| Hung Duc | Bay 16, My Dinh Bus Station | Selected departures from noon to 2:30 p.m. | Beside Bai Chay Bus Station | VND 215,000 |
| KumHo Viet Thanh | Big C Thang Long entrance | 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. | Confirm for the selected service | VND 150,000 |
The KumHo pickup shown here is at Big C Thang Long, not My Dinh Bus Station. Both are in western Hanoi, but you must go to the address on your ticket.
Bai Chay Bus Station is also separate from Ha Long International Cruise Port. Allow for the taxi connection after arrival.
Dao Thanh’s morning departures may be worth checking for a later cruise check-in, provided you leave enough time for that extra journey. Hung Duc’s afternoon services are more useful for arriving in Ha Long and checking into a hotel; they will not connect with a boat that has already left at noon.
Private cars and self-driving
Hiring a car with a driver
A private car is particularly useful for families, travellers with several suitcases, early cruise departures and airport pickups. You can choose the collection time and destination without fitting around other passengers.
2026 reference prices for a one-way private transfer from Hanoi to Ha Long started at:
| Vehicle category | Starting price for the vehicle |
|---|---|
| Five-seat electric car | VND 1,200,000 |
| Four-seat car | VND 1,300,000 |
| Seven-seat electric car | VND 1,400,000 |
| Seven-seat car | VND 1,500,000 |
| Nine-seat limousine or 16-seat vehicle | VND 2,500,000 |
These are starting prices through a booking platform working with transport providers. The published terms include fuel, tolls and parking, with one pickup and one drop-off. VAT and weekend or holiday supplements are excluded.
Tell the provider how many passengers and large bags you have. Vehicle seat labels do not tell you how much luggage space remains when the passenger seats are occupied.
For airport collection, also give your flight number and terminal. Ask how long the driver will wait without an additional charge and what happens if the flight is delayed. The Hanoi city transfer price should not be assumed to cover an airport pickup.
Driving yourself
Self-driving is more useful when your trip includes several stops on land. If you are simply going to a cruise lounge and leaving the car overnight, ask the operator where to park and how parking is charged.
The Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway uses electronic toll collection. A rental vehicle needs a working ETC tag and an adequately funded payment arrangement. Check this at handover rather than when you reach the toll lane.
Foreign visitors also need a driving licence recognised in Vietnam. Under the Vienna Convention route, an eligible 1968 Convention International Driving Permit must be carried with the appropriate national licence. Separate treaty arrangements may apply in some cases, so check the rules for your issuing country.
A rental company agreeing to hand over a car does not establish that your licence is valid for driving it in Vietnam.
Can you travel directly from Noi Bai Airport to Ha Long?
Yes. There is no need to go into Hanoi first.
The approximate road distance is 168 km to Tuan Chau and 174 km to the Bai Chay cruise port, depending on the route.
Two shared services listed in 2026 were:
| Operator | Listed airport meeting points | Ha Long drop-off | One-way fare per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bac Ninh Limousine | T2: pillar 15, level 1; T1: pillar E5, level 1 | Ha Long Post Office, near the Hon Gai clock tower | VND 290,000 |
| Anh Tung Limousine | T2: pillar 15, level 1; T1: pillar E5, level 1 | Bai Chay Bus Station | VND 280,000 |
Neither listed destination is a cruise port. Compare the onward taxi journey as well as the ticket price.
Also distinguish the route’s first departure time from your airport pickup time. Bac Ninh Limousine has a pickup point at 70 Nguyen Hoang in Hanoi, so a time shown for that stop is not necessarily the time it reaches T1 or T2.
Tell the operator when your flight lands, then agree on a pickup that leaves time for immigration, baggage collection and the walk outside.
For a same-day flight-to-cruise connection, a private car is easier to coordinate. Bhaya currently advises arriving at Noi Bai at least five hours before its cruise departure. For a noon sailing, that means a flight scheduled to land by 7 a.m.
That is planning guidance, not a guaranteed connection. A delayed flight or a long arrivals process can still upset the schedule. If you land close to midday, an overnight stay on land followed by a cruise the next day is a more workable plan.
Booking the return journey to Hanoi
The last bus from Ha Long is not necessarily the last bus collecting passengers at your port.
These were among the return options listed in 2026:
| Operator | Pickup | Reference departure time or range | Hanoi drop-off | Fare per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cuong Phat Limousine | Ha Long International Cruise Port | 11-11:45 a.m. | 6 Tong Dan | VND 270,000 |
| Le Phan Travel | Ha Long International Cruise Port | Selected departures from noon to 5 p.m. | Trang Tien | VND 290,000 |
| Ha Thanh Travel | Tuan Chau Port | 5:15 p.m. | Hanoi Opera House | VND 290,000 |
| Thang Long Ha Noi Limousine | D9, Tuan Chau port area | Selected departures between 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. | 41 Nguyen Huu Huan | VND 250,000 |
A departure range does not mean a vehicle leaves continuously. Choose a specific service for your date and confirm the meeting point.
If your boat is due back at Bai Chay at 11:30 a.m., an 11:45 a.m. pickup leaves only 15 minutes. That may be too tight once you collect your luggage and leave the terminal. Ask whether the transport provider specifically accepts passengers from your sailing, or choose a later departure.
For a day cruise returning around 4 p.m., the 5 p.m. Le Phan service at Bai Chay or the 5:15 p.m. Ha Thanh service at Tuan Chau may fit. Match the bus to the port your boat returns to.
If you want dinner in Ha Long before leaving, some services outside the ports run as late as 9 p.m., including listed Phuc Xuyen and Cua Ong Limousine departures. Their pickup points are elsewhere in town, and Hanoi drop-offs may be on Duong Dinh Nghe or Nguyen Hoang rather than in the Old Quarter.
For an evening flight, compare a direct private transfer from the port to Noi Bai with returning through central Hanoi. A bus scheduled to reach Hanoi at 8 p.m. is not scheduled to reach the airport at 8 p.m.
Is there a train from Hanoi to Ha Long?
There is currently no direct passenger train to book for this journey.
The Yen Vien-Ha Long mixed train service stopped operating on 30 April 2020. Older travel articles telling you to go to Yen Vien station for a direct train to Ha Long are not suitable for planning a current cruise connection.
If you would like a train journey as part of the trip, you can travel from Hanoi to Hai Phong and continue to Ha Long by road. This works better when you also want time in Hai Phong, perhaps with an overnight stay.
For getting straight to a cruise, the additional connection makes the schedule more complicated. Choose it because you want to visit Hai Phong, rather than as a shortcut to the boat.
Is a Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi worth it?
It can be, especially if you only have one free day and are happy to spend roughly five or six hours on the road. It is less appealing immediately after an overnight flight or when you want a slow, restful day.
The cruise timetable determines how early you need to leave.
Ambassador Day Cruise publishes an 8 a.m. check-in at its lounge in Ha Long International Cruise Port, followed by transfer to the vessel. A shared van leaving Hanoi at 7 or 8 a.m. cannot make that check-in.
If arranging your own transport, work backwards. To reach the port around 7:30 a.m. with three hours allowed for driving, you would need to leave around 4:30 a.m., before adding any further buffer. Confirm the actual pickup plan with the transport provider.
A day cruise can include Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island and the Luon Cave area, depending on the programme you book. Add the outward drive, check-in, return transfer and hotel drop-off, and it becomes a full-day outing. Keep the evening flexible instead of booking another activity close to the expected return time.
When comparing packages, check the transfer, boat trip, bay sightseeing fees, port charges and optional activities separately. Some packages include several of these; others do not. The lowest advertised cruise price may not produce the lowest total cost.
The easiest order for making your bookings
Start with the cruise confirmation: port, lounge and required arrival time. Ask about the cruise operator’s transfer, then compare shared or private alternatives using those exact details. Book the return around the time you can realistically leave the port.
Your transport message should include the date, passenger count, luggage, hotel address or airport terminal, cruise name and port. Save the agreed meeting point in Vietnamese as well as on a map.
Once both journeys are settled, you can focus on choosing what to do on the bay. With another day available, consider continuing to Hai Phong or Cat Ba, checking the onward connection before giving up your return ticket to Hanoi.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi, and how long does it take?
From the Hoan Kiem Lake area, it is approximately 146 km to Tuan Chau Port and 153 km to Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. Allow around 2.5-3 hours in favourable conditions, with extra time for shared pickups, rest stops and traffic.
Can I get a shared limousine from the Old Quarter to Tuan Chau Port?
Yes, although some services use central meeting points rather than collecting from every hotel. Reference 2026 fares include Ha Thanh Travel at VND 290,000, Thanh An at VND 240,000 and VietNam Explore’s limousine service at VND 340,000 per person, one way. Confirm the pickup and exact port drop-off before paying.
Is there a direct train from Hanoi to Ha Long?
There is currently no direct passenger service to book. You can take a train to Hai Phong and continue by road, which is more suitable if you also want to spend time in Hai Phong.
Can I go straight from Noi Bai Airport to my Ha Long cruise?
Yes. A private car can be arranged to the cruise port. Shared airport services are also available, but the Bac Ninh Limousine and Anh Tung Limousine stops listed in this guide require an onward transfer to the port. Check any same-day flight connection with your cruise operator first.
Is Ha Long Bay manageable as a day trip from Hanoi?
Yes, provided you accept a long day and choose transport that fits the cruise. An 8 a.m. port check-in requires a very early departure from Hanoi or an overnight stay in Ha Long. An 8 a.m. Hanoi pickup will not work for that sailing.
