Hai Phong to Phu Quoc: 7 common travel mistakes and how to fix them

Two airlines fly nonstop from Cat Bi to Phu Quoc, fares only compare fairly once baggage is added, and a domestic flight does not give foreign travelers a new 30-day visa exemption. This guide runs from flights and entry documents to airport transfers, the best months, and a three-day plan that doesn't rush.

Kiss Bridge's walkways curve just above the sea at Sunset Town as the setting sun lays a gold strip on the water, with a sailboat and a few motorboats further out.

Visiting Cat Ba from Hai Phong feels like a spontaneous weekend plan, while a trip to Phu Quoc takes a little more thought, from booking flights to finding your hotel on the island. Two airlines currently operate nonstop flights from Cat Bi Airport (HPH) to Phu Quoc (PQC): Vietjet Air and Sun PhuQuoc Airways, with a flight time of around 2 hours and 5 minutes. For a 3-day, 2-night getaway, start by finding a departure and return flight that work together, then choose your hotel area and plan the rest of your trip.

1. Assuming direct flights follow the same schedule every day

You can fly nonstop from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc, but flight frequency and departure times vary throughout the year, and search results sometimes still show schedules published several months earlier.

Which airlines fly directly from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc?

Two airlines fly nonstop between Cat Bi and Phu Quoc: Vietjet Air and Sun PhuQuoc Airways.

AirlineReference scheduleFlight duration
Sun PhuQuoc AirwaysApproximately 1 flight daily2 hr 5 min
Vietjet AirApproximately 4 flights weekly, varies by period2 hr 5 min
Vietnam AirlinesNonstop service suspendedConnecting flights, generally 4 hours or longer

Sun PhuQuoc Airways launched the route on July 25, 2026. Its original published schedule had flights leaving Cat Bi at 10:00 AM and arriving in Phu Quoc at 12:05 PM, with the return service departing Phu Quoc at 12:55 PM and reaching Hai Phong at 3:00 PM.

That schedule has since shifted. Flight 9G2501 now runs at approximately 8:55 AM-11:00 AM, while the return flight, 9G2500, is scheduled around 11:50 AM-1:55 PM.

Vietjet’s VJ761 also operates on selected days, including Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, with departures from Hai Phong at approximately 2:40 PM.

Although Vietjet’s route information page still mentions around two flights per day, the actual timetable has fewer departures. Treat that advertised frequency as general route information rather than a guaranteed daily service.

Before booking your hotel, check the airline’s reservation system for your exact travel dates. The schedule shown during booking is more useful than an older route announcement.

Why does Vietnam Airlines still sell Hai Phong - Phu Quoc tickets?

Vietnam Airlines resumed nonstop services between Hai Phong and Phu Quoc on February 1, 2026, initially operating three round trips per week. The airline suspended the route from April 1, 2026, during adjustments to its network related to fuel costs and supply.

You may still find Hai Phong - Phu Quoc tickets on the Vietnam Airlines website, but these usually involve a connection through Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Connection times can range from approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes, bringing the total journey to around 4-9 hours.

2. Booking the cheapest flight without checking baggage fees

A flight advertised for just a few hundred thousand Vietnamese dong can look like an excellent deal. But once taxes, airport fees, checked baggage, and optional seat selection are added, the final price may be considerably higher.

How much are flights from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc?

Vietjet sells some one-way tickets from VND 299,000 for dates in November and December 2026.

These are promotional fares. Availability is limited, checked baggage is not included, and the price does not apply to every departure.

Check the return fare too: a cheap flight from Cat Bi to Phu Quoc can pair with a pricier flight back. Prices can rise significantly around holidays or during periods of high travel demand.

Recent round-trip fare data offers a rough picture of seasonal pricing:

  • September: generally the cheapest month, with an average round-trip fare of about VND 1.96 million.
  • April and June: among the most expensive months, averaging approximately VND 4.7-4.75 million for a return ticket.
  • November to March: often appealing for better weather, although fares tend to rise during major holidays and the Lunar New Year period.

For a short holiday, a budget of approximately VND 2.5-4.1 million for round-trip flights is a reasonable starting point, with adjustments for your actual dates.

This is a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed fare or the lowest available price.

For trips around Tet, the summer holidays, or Vietnam’s April 30 holiday period, searching early gives you more choices. Moving your departure or return by just a day or two can sometimes make a noticeable difference, particularly on routes with relatively few weekly flights.

Vietjet Eco vs. Sun PhuQuoc Airways: what’s included?

The biggest difference is checked baggage.

Ticket typeCabin baggageChecked baggage included
Vietjet Eco7 kgNot included
Vietjet Deluxe7 kg20 kg
Vietjet SkyBoss10 kg30 kg, plus eligible golf baggage benefits
Sun Economy Lite7 kgOne 23 kg piece
Sun Economy Classic, Flex, Plus7 kgOne 23 kg piece

Domestic Sun PhuQuoc Airways tickets issued from February 3, 2026 include one checked bag weighing up to 23 kg in all four economy fare types, which makes a real difference for families or anyone packing more than a small carry-on.

Vietjet Eco, meanwhile, is better suited to travelers who pack lightly. Adding checked baggage generally costs around VND 155,000-435,000 per flight segment, depending on the baggage allowance, booking channel, and purchase timing.

Buying additional baggage at the airport usually leaves you with fewer options than arranging it beforehand.

Fare flexibility matters too. Sun’s Economy Lite generally does not allow voluntary changes or refunds, while Economy Classic permits changes or refunds subject to a fee, typically VND 450,000 per transaction, plus any applicable fare difference.

Dates still uncertain? Checking the change conditions is just as useful as comparing the initial price.

Can you bring Phu Quoc specialties back to Hai Phong?

Popular souvenirs include Phu Quoc pepper, fish sauce, dried seafood, and locally made gifts.

Pepper and properly packaged dried foods are generally easier to transport than liquids or strongly scented products.

Vietjet’s standard checked-baggage rules limit each piece to 32 kg, with maximum dimensions of 119 × 119 × 81 cm.

Fish sauce, strong-smelling foods, and liquids are subject to airline-specific restrictions. A bottle sealed inside your suitcase can still be refused.

Check the operating carrier’s rules before buying these products, particularly when your ticket involves more than one airline.

3. Choosing a connecting flight to save money and losing most of day one

A nonstop flight from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc takes just over two hours. A connecting itinerary can consume an entire morning or afternoon.

That difference matters on a 3-day, 2-night holiday.

You might pay for two nights at a beachfront hotel, only to arrive on the island late in the evening, leaving barely enough time to check in and have dinner.

When do you need a connecting flight?

A connection becomes an option when there is no suitable nonstop service on your preferred date, direct flights are sold out, or the departure times do not work with your schedule.

Connecting through Ho Chi Minh City: fly from Cat Bi to Tan Son Nhat Airport, then continue to Phu Quoc.

Whenever possible, choose a connecting itinerary issued under a single booking rather than buying two unrelated tickets. Read the baggage-transfer conditions and check what protection the airline provides if the first flight is delayed.

With separate tickets, missing the second flight may become your responsibility.

Departing from Hanoi instead: travel overland from Hai Phong to Noi Bai International Airport, then take a nonstop flight from Hanoi to Phu Quoc.

This opens up more departure choices, but remember to include the journey to Hanoi, possible traffic delays, and airport check-in time.

When the price difference is only a few hundred thousand dong, the nonstop flight is worth it on a three-day break. The time saved could mean an extra swim, a relaxed seafood lunch, or a quiet afternoon by the beach.

Why check your return flight before booking the outbound journey?

Your return departure determines how much time you actually get on the island.

Open the outbound and return schedules together before paying. Look at your total time on the island, not simply the advertised ticket price.

Also double-check the arrival airport. Cat Bi (HPH) serves Hai Phong, while Noi Bai (HAN) serves Hanoi. They are not interchangeable.

A flight leaving Phu Quoc at 11:50 AM or shortly after noon gives you very little sightseeing time on the final morning. A later flight adds more flexibility, although you still need to consider work commitments or any onward international connections.

4. Assuming every foreigner flying from Hai Phong gets 30 visa-free days in Phu Quoc

International visitors staying in Hai Phong get this wrong more than anything else, especially those who have just entered Vietnam through Cat Bi Airport and want to add a few days on a tropical island.

Phu Quoc has a special 30-day visa exemption, but eligibility depends on how you enter Vietnam.

Who qualifies for Phu Quoc’s 30-day visa exemption?

Phu Quoc’s special entry policy allows eligible foreign passport holders to enter the island and stay for up to 30 days without obtaining a Vietnamese visa.

The policy is open to all nationalities.

What decides it is your entry route, not your nationality.

Situation 1: you arrive in Phu Quoc from another country.

Travelers flying directly from abroad to Phu Quoc can use the 30-day visa exemption, provided they meet the relevant entry conditions.

Certain international transit arrangements through airports on mainland Vietnam may also qualify, as long as passengers remain in the international transit area and continue to Phu Quoc without formally entering Vietnam on the mainland.

This arrangement requires confirmation from the airline before booking. Not every combination of flights allows passengers to remain in international transit.

Situation 2: you have already entered Vietnam in Hai Phong.

Suppose you fly from overseas into Cat Bi, complete immigration formalities, spend several days exploring Hai Phong, and then take a domestic flight to Phu Quoc.

The same principle applies to foreign residents of Hai Phong who hold valid residence permits or temporary residence cards. They travel under their existing immigration status rather than receiving a new entry period simply by flying to the island.

What do European, American, Australian, Korean, Chinese, and Thai travelers need?

For visitors entering Vietnam through Hai Phong before traveling to Phu Quoc, the usual rules by nationality:

NationalityCommon entry arrangement for Vietnam
South KoreaVisa-free entry for up to 45 days
United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, SpainVisa-free entry for up to 45 days
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, FinlandVisa-free entry for up to 45 days
Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and certain other European countriesUp to 45 days visa-free under the tourism scheme running through August 14, 2028
ThailandUp to 30 days visa-free under a bilateral arrangement
United States, Australia, ChinaGenerally require an e-visa or another valid entry authorization

These arrangements apply to eligible travelers holding ordinary passports and meeting the relevant entry conditions. Residence permits, special passport types, and individual exceptions may follow different rules.

Vietnam’s electronic visa system is available to citizens of all countries and territories under the current policy.

An e-visa can be valid for up to 90 days, with either single or multiple entries.

The application fees are currently:

  • USD 25: single-entry e-visa.
  • USD 50: multiple-entry e-visa.

Applications can be submitted through Vietnam’s official e-visa portal.

Once your e-visa is issued, check the spelling of your name, passport number, validity start date, and expiry date carefully.

A domestic flight ticket from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc does not replace a valid visa or other document establishing your right to stay in Vietnam.

Can you fly from Phu Quoc to Hai Phong after entering visa-free?

Not automatically.

Someone who entered Vietnam solely under Phu Quoc’s special 30-day visa exemption must have an appropriate legal basis to enter or stay in the rest of Vietnam before traveling to Hai Phong or another mainland destination.

Travelers whose nationalities qualify for Vietnam’s general visa-waiver policies may be able to use those arrangements, subject to the applicable conditions.

Others may need to obtain a suitable visa through the relevant immigration procedures. Certain cases involve a sponsoring individual, organization, or company in Vietnam.

The simplest approach for a trip combining Hai Phong and Phu Quoc is to settle your entry arrangements before leaving home. Travelers who need a visa should get the right Vietnamese e-visa before the trip; sorting it out from the island is harder.

Changing your immigration status is not automatic, and an airline may refuse to carry a passenger who lacks the required documents.

5. Booking a hotel without realizing how far it is from Phu Quoc Airport

Phu Quoc stretches a considerable distance from north to south, while its international airport sits roughly in the middle of the island, toward the western coast.

Two hotels that both advertise themselves as being in Phu Quoc might be separated by dozens of kilometers.

Looking down on Phu Quoc airport from a hillside: two planes on the runway, the white-roofed terminal behind and plenty of cleared building land around it.

Since July 1, 2025, Phu Quoc has belonged to An Giang Province following Vietnam’s administrative reorganization. Its updated administrative designation is Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang Province, although many hotel booking platforms and maps still show the former Kien Giang Province address.

How far is Phu Quoc Airport from Duong Dong, Long Beach, and An Thoi?

Approximate driving distances and journey times from the airport:

DestinationDistanceEstimated driving time
Bai Truong (Long Beach)5-7 km10-15 minutes
Duong DongAround 11 km15-25 minutes
An Thoi / Sunset Town19-21 km25-35 minutes
Ganh Dau / Grand WorldAround 32 km40-50 minutes
Vinpearl SafariAround 36 km45-55 minutes
Bai Dai and northern resortsAround 38 km45-60 minutes

Travel times depend on your hotel’s exact location, traffic, and weather.

Duong Dong

About 11 km, 15-25 minutes

Duong Dong is a convenient base for first-time visitors who enjoy local restaurants, night markets, cafés, and easy access to transportation. Accommodation ranges from small hotels to larger properties in surrounding neighborhoods.

Evening strollers pass under the red Dinh Cau night market sign in Duong Dong, with clothing and souvenir stalls lining both sides of the entrance.

Bai Truong (Long Beach)

5-7 km, 10-15 minutes

Bai Truong (Long Beach) is the best all-round base for a 3-day, 2-night trip. It’s close to the airport, has plenty of beachfront accommodation, and makes trips to the south more manageable. On a clear evening the sun sets over the sea right off parts of the beach.

A clear, sunny day at Long Beach (Bãi Trường), with a resort's thatched umbrellas and white loungers on the sand, palms along the shore and pale blue water.

An Thoi and Sunset Town

19-21 km, 25-35 minutes

An Thoi and Sunset Town are ideal for travelers interested in the Hon Thom cable car, Kiss Bridge, and evening shows. Staying in the south reduces the journey back after a performance, although visiting attractions in northern Phu Quoc takes longer.

Ganh Dau and Bai Dai

About 32-38 km, 40-60 minutes

Ganh Dau and the northern Bai Dai resort area suit families planning a resort-focused holiday with visits to Grand World, VinWonders, or Vinpearl Safari. The trade-off is a longer airport transfer and potentially higher transportation costs.

Should you take a taxi, Grab, Green SM, or airport bus?

After collecting your luggage, you can find the official taxi pickup area on Level 1 of Terminal T1.

Traditional taxis, Grab, and Green SM (formerly Xanh SM) are among the transportation options available on the island.

In a ride-hailing app, enter your hotel’s exact name and check the designated pickup point in the app. Fares depend on distance, demand, weather, and time of day, so there is no single fixed price that applies to every journey.

Families with young children, travelers carrying several suitcases, and guests staying at remote northern resorts may find a prearranged hotel transfer more convenient.

Send the hotel your flight number in advance so the driver can monitor delays.

Phu Quoc also has VinBus services connecting the airport with different parts of the island. Routes 17 and 19 are particularly relevant, linking the airport with Grand World and parts of the southern resort area.

Some services run into the evening, but operating hours and stops should always be checked against the timetable for your travel date.

The bus is a budget-friendly option when you have little luggage and your hotel is near a stop. For accommodation tucked away along a small road or within a large resort complex, you may still need additional transportation for the final stretch.

6. Choosing the cheapest month without checking Phu Quoc’s rainy season

September may offer some attractive airfares, but it is also one of the rainiest months in Phu Quoc.

A short holiday built around beaches, cable cars, and outdoor activities depends on the month almost as much as on the flight.

When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc stays warm throughout the year, with average daytime highs generally ranging from 28°C to 31°C.

Rainfall is what changes most noticeably between seasons.

Looking back over 2015-2024, Phu Quoc’s seasons are fairly distinct.

December to March: this is the driest period. February receives an average of around 40 mm of rain, January about 62 mm, March approximately 58 mm, and December around 69 mm. These months usually offer better conditions for outdoor sightseeing.

April: temperatures climb, with average daytime highs reaching around 31°C and monthly rainfall increasing to approximately 136 mm. It’s a transitional month and can be rewarding for travelers comfortable with hot weather.

May to October: the rainy season becomes much more pronounced, with average monthly rainfall of roughly 344-501 mm. September is the wettest month in this dataset, averaging about 501 mm, while July also sees substantial rainfall at around 467 mm.

November: rainfall begins to ease, averaging approximately 179 mm. Conditions often improve as the dry season approaches, although heavy showers can still occur.

These figures are long-term climate averages, not forecasts for specific travel dates.

Is it better to choose cheap flights or better weather?

With only three days on the island, December through March is the safest window. Flights and accommodation may cost more, but there is generally less chance of rain disrupting your plans.

November and early April can also be worth considering for a balance between price and weather.

7. Trying to see the entire island in three days and forgetting your return flight

Phu Quoc has enough attractions to fill a week, so a 3-day, 2-night plan easily ends up shuttling from the far north to the far south every day.

A more comfortable plan starts with one hotel base, groups nearby attractions together, and keeps the final morning simple.

  1. Day 1

Fly from Cat Bi to Phu Quoc, check in, and enjoy the beach

Taking the Sun PhuQuoc Airways morning flight as an example, you could leave Cat Bi around 8:55 AM and arrive in Phu Quoc at 11:00 AM.

After collecting your luggage, take a taxi or prearranged transfer to your hotel in Bai Truong or Duong Dong.

Around lunchtime, grab something to eat, leave your bags at reception, and take a break. Many hotels have a check-in time around 2:00 PM, so confirm it in advance.

Spend the afternoon near the sea.

At Bai Truong, you can walk along the sand, swim in a designated safe area when conditions allow, and watch the sunset without traveling far from your accommodation.

In the evening, head into Duong Dong for seafood or a stroll around the night market.

Small local restaurants serving bun quay (fresh seafood noodle soup), fish cake noodle soup, crab, and freshly prepared seafood make an easy first dinner on the island.

That is enough for day one, particularly after an early start in Hai Phong.

  2. Day 2

Southern Phu Quoc, Hon Thom, and Sunset Town

Make this the main sightseeing day of your trip.

After breakfast, travel south to An Thoi and the Hon Thom cable car station.

The cable car runs in two main periods: 9:30-11:30 AM and 1:30-5:00 PM.

The cable car crosses open sea, looking down on small offshore islands and the waters of the An Thoi archipelago.

Once on Hon Thom, spend time at Aquatopia Water Park, explore the Exotica amusement area, or relax by the beach.

Most attractions finish operating around 4:45 PM, with the cable car scheduled to close at 5:00 PM, so head back to the mainland a little before closing.

Later in the afternoon, make your way to Sunset Town.

Walk the rows of brightly painted, Mediterranean-style buildings, take photos, and watch the sun drop toward the sea near Kiss Bridge.

The area also hosts evening performances, including Symphony of the Sea and Kiss of the Sea.

Symphony of the Sea is commonly scheduled for approximately 7:30-8:05 PM, with standard tickets starting around VND 640,000.

Kiss of the Sea generally begins at around 9:00 PM. Ticket holders should aim to reach the seating area by approximately 8:30 PM.

Performance times, ticket prices, and operating days may change, so check the schedule for your particular evening before committing to a show.

Afterward, return to your hotel for the night.

An alternative for families with children: spend the entire second day in northern Phu Quoc instead, visiting Vinpearl Safari and Grand World.

Vinpearl Safari normally opens from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with animal presentations commonly scheduled for 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Night Safari is another possible experience, subject to its separate operating schedule and ticket availability.

On a three-day holiday, pick either the northern attractions or the Hon Thom and Sunset Town route. Safari and Hon Thom sit at opposite ends of the island, and doing both in one day means most of it is spent in a car.

  3. Day 3

Breakfast, check out, and fly back to Hai Phong

Suppose you’re taking a Sun PhuQuoc Airways flight departing Phu Quoc at 11:50 AM.

That leaves a fairly short final morning.

Around 7:00-8:00 AM, enjoy breakfast at the hotel, take a short beach walk, or have coffee somewhere nearby.

Then return to your room, check your belongings, and complete checkout.

Aim to arrive at the airport roughly 90 minutes before a domestic departure, while also checking the airline’s official check-in and baggage-drop deadlines.

Travelers with checked luggage or young children may want a little more time.

From Bai Truong, the airport is relatively close. Leaving around 9:30-9:45 AM provides some extra time for arranging transportation and reaching the terminal.

From Duong Dong or a more distant resort, adjust your departure accordingly.

A flight arriving at Cat Bi around 1:55 PM is convenient for travelers returning to Hai Phong the same day.

Anyone connecting to an international flight should allow a much larger buffer, particularly when the tickets are booked separately.

What if your return flight leaves in the afternoon?

A later departure gives you more time on the island, but your final activities should still be close to your hotel.

A swim, a leisurely lunch, or a nearby café visit is much easier to manage than heading all the way to An Thoi and rushing back toward the airport.

For connecting flights through Ho Chi Minh City, read the schedule for every segment and check whether your luggage will be transferred automatically.

Plan around the time you land back in Hai Phong, not the time you leave Phu Quoc.

A trip from Hai Phong to Cat Ba can come together on the spur of the moment. Phu Quoc works better in order: flights, baggage, entry documents, hotel location, then sightseeing. With outbound and return flights that fit, three days cover the beaches, a couple of sunsets, and the flight back to Cat Bi without watching the clock.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc, and how long do they take?

Yes. Vietjet Air and Sun PhuQuoc Airways operate nonstop flights between Cat Bi Airport (HPH) and Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC). The flight takes approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes. Sun generally operates around one flight per day, while Vietjet's schedule varies by season. At times it runs only about four flights per week.

What is the cheapest month to fly from Hai Phong to Phu Quoc?

Recent round-trip fare data suggests that September is generally the cheapest month, averaging about VND 1.96 million. However, September is also one of Phu Quoc's wettest months. For a better balance between weather and price, consider November, early December, or March, while avoiding major holiday periods where possible.

Can foreigners flying from Hai Phong use Phu Quoc's 30-day visa exemption?

A domestic flight from Cat Bi to Phu Quoc does not automatically grant a new 30-day visa exemption. Foreign visitors who have already entered Vietnam through Hai Phong must continue traveling under their existing visa, general visa exemption, or valid residence status. Phu Quoc's special 30-day exemption applies to eligible travelers entering the island from abroad under the specific immigration conditions.

How far is Phu Quoc Airport from Duong Dong, Long Beach, and An Thoi?

Phu Quoc Airport is approximately 5-7 km from Bai Truong (Long Beach), 11 km from Duong Dong, and 19-21 km from An Thoi. Typical car journeys take around 10-15 minutes, 15-25 minutes, and 25-35 minutes respectively. Northern resort areas near Ganh Dau and Bai Dai can be more than 30 km from the airport.

Where should I stay in Phu Quoc for a 3-day, 2-night trip?

Bai Truong (Long Beach) is a good all-round choice for beach time, airport convenience, and access to southern Phu Quoc. Duong Dong works well for local restaurants, the night market, and a wider range of hotels. Choose An Thoi or Sunset Town for easy access to Hon Thom, Kiss Bridge, and evening shows. Families focusing on Safari, VinWonders, and resort activities may prefer northern Phu Quoc.
