Hai Phong to Ninh Binh: bus, limousine or private car?

Traveling from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh by road is usually the easiest option, especially if you're heading straight to Tam Coc or Trang An. Just check your pickup location carefully, as many services advertised as departing from Hai Phong actually start on Cat Ba Island.

Phượng La CàPublished Updated 14 min read

At Trang An (Tràng An) each small boat carries a few passengers in orange life jackets plus one rower, moving in a long line between the cliffs.

The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong Expressway shows up on the map, but it isn’t fully connected yet, and every operator seems to pick up somewhere different. Staying in downtown Hai Phong or just landed at Cat Bi Airport, start by pinning down where your bus or car really picks you up.

How far is Hai Phong from Ninh Binh, and how long does it take?

From Hai Phong Opera House in the city center, it’s approximately 125 km to Ninh Binh Railway Station and around 130 km to Tam Coc. From Cat Bi International Airport, the drive to Tam Coc is slightly longer, at roughly 139 km.

Google Maps may occasionally suggest a driving time of just 1 hour and 45 minutes. That assumes smooth, uninterrupted traffic. Parts of the journey follow national roads, pass through residential areas, and involve traffic lights and slower sections.

For a private car, allow around 2.5-3.5 hours. Buses and limousines can take longer because they make scheduled pickups and drop-offs along the way. Services starting on Cat Ba Island also need to account for the ferry crossing or other connecting transport.

The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong Expressway (CT.08) is not yet fully completed as a continuous route. On September 25, 2026, Hai Phong approved the investment policy for completing the relevant expressway section within the city and its connections, so travel times still follow the existing roads.

Central Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, and Trang An are different places

Since July 1, 2025, the expanded Ninh Binh Province has included the former Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces. As a sightseeing destination, though, "Ninh Binh" means the area around Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and Trang An in the former Ninh Binh Province.

Tam Coc and Trang An are not two names for the same boat pier. With accommodation in Tam Coc and a bus that stops in central Ninh Binh, you’ll still need a taxi for the final part of the trip.

Tam Coc has its own pier, a separate drive from Trang An, so name it as your drop-off when booking a car from Hai Phong.

That last taxi hurts more with a large suitcase or after dark, and it can cancel out the savings on a slightly cheaper ticket.

Taking a bus from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh

The bus suits solo travelers and tight budgets. The route has both standard coaches and more comfortable tourist vehicles, but not every journey listed on booking platforms suits someone staying in downtown Hai Phong.

Around 20-21 services run on this route daily, with reference fares ranging from 220,000 to 570,000 VND per person, one way. Many tourist services depart between approximately 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM, depending on the operator.

Standard coach tickets also start from around 150,000 VND at Vinh Niem Bus Station. Some of these go to Nho Quan rather than the Tam Coc area, so check the arrival station, not just the province name printed on the ticket.

Why do so many "Hai Phong" buses depart from Cat Ba Island?

On ticket websites, you might come across operators such as Daiichi Travel, Cat Ba Discovery, The Long Travel, The New Way, or Green Bus. Many of their journeys start at offices on Cat Ba Island before crossing to the mainland by ferry or connecting transport and continuing toward Ninh Binh.

Because Cat Ba is administratively part of Hai Phong, these trips appear under the Hai Phong-Ninh Binh route. Book one by mistake from a hotel near Hai Phong Opera House and your bus will be waiting on Nui Ngoc Street or 1/4 Street, out on Cat Ba Island.

City-center guests should look for a pickup at Vinh Niem Bus Station or another stop along the operator’s route.

Some services advertise stops around Dinh Vu Plaza, but not every bus that passes through takes passengers there, so confirm it for your departure.

Unclear answers? It’s better to keep looking than to book the wrong trip.

How long does the bus take?

A bus departing from the mainland may take around 3-4 hours, depending on its stops and final destination.

Tourist buses starting from Cat Ba Island are advertised at around 4-5 hours, longer if there’s a wait for the ferry.

The travel time on the ticket is an estimate. The bus may visit an office, collect guests from hotels, or stop at several pickup locations before continuing.

A little extra travel time won’t matter too much on a day when all you’re doing is checking into your hotel and having dinner. To make an afternoon boat trip, pick a service with fewer stops.

Is a limousine from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh worth it?

A limousine with a convenient pickup point is a comfortable middle ground between a regular bus and a private car.

In Vietnam, a "limousine" usually means a premium passenger van or coach with larger reclining seats, air conditioning, and a more spacious interior, not a stretch sedan.

Some operators pick up or drop off within certain areas; hotel-to-hotel service depends on the company.

The fare depends on the operator, seating type, and departure location. For example, Ninh Binh Travel has previously listed limousine tickets at around 350,000 VND one way. You’ll still need to confirm the current price and boarding point for your travel date.

Staying in Tam Coc? Look for a service that specifically lists Tam Coc Boat Pier or a nearby location as its drop-off point.

Depending on the company, passengers may be dropped at an office in central Ninh Binh, Dong Gung Bus Station, a hotel, Tam Coc Boat Pier or Ninh Binh Railway Station.

International travelers should sort out how the driver will reach them. Some companies call passengers or send pickup instructions through Zalo, a popular messaging app in Vietnam.

No Vietnamese phone number? Ask whether the operator can contact you through WhatsApp, email, or your international number.

A limousine is a good choice when three things are confirmed: where you’ll be picked up, where you’ll be dropped off, and whether you’ll need to change vehicles.

Private car from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh: best for groups and airport arrivals

A private car suits groups of two to four, travelers with several suitcases, or anyone heading straight to a homestay in Tam Coc. There’s no bus station to reach and no pickup arrangement to decode.

Your driver can collect you at your hotel, Hai Phong Railway Station, or Cat Bi Airport and take you directly to your accommodation in Ninh Binh.

Prices vary between companies, but in 2026 one-way transfers cost approximately:

  • 4-seat private car: 1,000,000-1,400,000 VND per vehicle.
  • 7-seat private car: 1,200,000-1,600,000 VND per vehicle.

These are indicative prices for the whole vehicle, not fixed ride-hailing fares.

When the cost is shared between three or four people, a private transfer can work out close to the combined price of limousine tickets. You also save time on waiting, changing vehicles, and taking another taxi at the destination.

Before confirming your booking, ask whether the quote includes road tolls and waiting time, and settle the pickup and drop-off points.

A full-day car, with the driver waiting while you sightsee and then taking you back to Hai Phong, is priced differently from a one-way transfer: ask for a separate round-trip quote that covers sightseeing stops and waiting time, rather than doubling the one-way fare.

How to get from Cat Bi Airport to Ninh Binh

Cat Bi International Airport is approximately 9-10 km from central Hai Phong. From the airport you can head straight for Ninh Binh; the Opera House area only matters if your booked transport departs from there.

For travelers with luggage or flights arriving in the afternoon or evening, a pre-booked private car from Cat Bi Airport directly to Tam Coc, Trang An, or your hotel is usually the simplest option.

When booking, send the driver your flight number, scheduled arrival time, passenger count, and number of suitcases.

International arrivals still have immigration and baggage collection ahead of them, so set the pickup time well after the landing time.

To keep costs down, you can use Grab or the electric taxi service Green SM to reach your bus pickup point.

Green SM is the new name of Xanh SM following its April 2026 rebranding. The service operates a customer support hotline at 1555, with English support available through the phone menu.

Grab also provides car services in Hai Phong, including airport pickups at Cat Bi.

Ride-hailing fares vary according to demand and traffic, so enter your actual pickup and destination in the app to check the estimated price. On longer interprovincial journeys, make sure the app supports the requested route.

A late flight changes things: the better plan is spending a night in Hai Phong or arranging a private transfer in advance.

Chasing one of the last buses of the day without knowing how long airport procedures will take is how people miss it.

Driving yourself from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh

Self-driving can work well if you’re already comfortable with Vietnamese roads, want to stop along the way, or plan to return to Hai Phong on the same day.

Use Google Maps to navigate directly to the parking area of your chosen attraction or hotel.

Avoid simply entering "Ninh Binh" as your destination. Since the provincial merger, that name covers a much larger area than the traditional Hoa Lu tourism region.

The journey uses a mixture of major roads and national routes, with some sections passing through towns and residential areas. Speed limits change frequently, and the shortest Google Maps estimate is hard to match.

From Tan De (Tân Đệ) Bridge on National Road 10, the Red River opens out to the horizon, with green farmed banks on one side and tiny barges mid-stream.

A rental car needs a driving licence legally valid in Vietnam; read the rental company’s insurance and vehicle return conditions too. International visitors unfamiliar with local traffic will find a car with a driver more relaxing.

Beyond the rental fee, add fuel, road tolls, parking, and the drive back: another two and a half hours or more at the wheel after a day of sightseeing.

Is there a direct train from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh?

No, there is currently no direct passenger train from Hai Phong Railway Station to Ninh Binh Railway Station without a change.

The rail route works like this:

  1. Leg 1

Hai Phong Railway Station → Hanoi

First, take a train from Hai Phong toward Hanoi.

The Hoa Phuong Do (Red Flamboyant) trains and other passenger services on this route typically take around 2 hours and 25 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes. There are around four main train pairs daily, although additional services and adjustments are possible.

  2. Leg 2

Hanoi → Ninh Binh Railway Station

From Hanoi, continue on a southbound Reunification Express train stopping at Ninh Binh. This second rail journey usually takes a little over two hours.

Vietnam Railways previously advertised regular rotating seats on the Hoa Phuong Do train at around 150,000 VND on weekdays and 180,000 VND on weekends. VIP seating was listed at approximately 300,000-350,000 VND under its summer 2025 fare information.

Actual prices in 2026 may differ according to your travel date, seat category, and booking fees.

On the Hanoi-Ninh Binh section, some soft-seat fares start around 124,000-167,000 VND, with sleeper berths and other classes costing more.

The train lets you watch everyday landscapes go past the window, but once you include the transfer and waiting time in Hanoi, the full journey could take around 5-7 hours or longer, depending on how the timetables connect.

The train makes sense for travelers who want to try Vietnam’s railways, have plenty of time, and don’t mind making a connection. The road is more practical for reaching Tam Coc in time to check in.

How to book your Hai Phong to Ninh Binh ticket without mistakes

Before opening a ticket-booking website, find the exact address of your accommodation in Ninh Binh.

Ideally, ask your hotel or homestay to send you a Google Maps pin. You can then use that location when asking bus companies about their drop-off points.

Next, visit Vexere or another booking platform, select your departure date, and open the details of each available service.

The route name tells you little. Scroll down to the pickup and drop-off information and read the street names, offices, and bus stations.

A pickup on Nui Ngoc Street, Tung Dinh, or 1/4 Street is on Cat Ba Island, not in downtown Hai Phong on the mainland.

International travelers should keep the hotel’s Vietnamese name and address saved on their phone.

When the driver asks where you’re getting off, showing the written address and map pin is often easier than trying to pronounce an unfamiliar place name.

Booking a private car? Send the destination pin in advance and ask for the total fare to be confirmed in writing, so there’s no argument about the price on arrival.

Is a day trip from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh worth it?

It’s possible, but a day trip leaves little room for a slow boat ride, a long lunch, or exploring without watching the clock.

Driving there and back can already take around 5-7 hours.

Add a boat trip, meals, ticket queues, and transfers between attractions, and the day becomes quite long.

A public bus also ties you to departure schedules and the time spent collecting other passengers, so a Ninh Binh day trip from Hai Phong makes the most sense with a private car or your own vehicle.

A manageable day: leave Hai Phong around 6:30-7:00 AM, reach the sightseeing area during the morning, enjoy one boat route, stop for lunch, and begin the return journey in the middle or later part of the afternoon.

At Trang An, boat trips take around 2-3.5 hours depending on the route, plus time to buy tickets, queue, and reach the boarding area.

On a day trip, pick either the Trang An or the Tam Coc boat ride. They’re around 10 km apart, and each is a separate trip that needs its own time.

Hoa Lu (Hoa Lư) was the capital for some four decades before the court moved to Thang Long (Thăng Long), today's Hanoi, in 1010; one temple complex like this fits a day trip.

An overnight stay is easier. Leave Hai Phong in the morning or around midday, check into your accommodation in Ninh Binh, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon and dinner.

The next morning, take your boat trip before checking out and returning to Hai Phong.

For first-time visitors, particularly international travelers moving between several destinations in northern Vietnam, 2 days and 1 night fits better than one day.

Returning from Ninh Binh to Hai Phong

The return journey offers similar transport choices, but you’ll need to pay just as much attention to where the bus actually drops you.

Quite a few services advertised as Ninh Binh to Hai Phong continue all the way to Cat Ba Island.

Heading back to Hai Phong Railway Station, the city center, or Cat Bi Airport? Confirm that your service has an approved mainland drop-off point. A ticket to Cat Ba bought because the route says Hai Phong leaves you relying on the driver to let you off somewhere along the way.

If you’re staying in Tam Coc, you may find services collecting passengers near the boat pier or local travel offices.

Some operators provide hotel pickup within certain areas, but this needs to be confirmed for each departure.

To catch a flight from Hai Phong, leave a generous buffer for traffic, possible delays, and airport procedures.

A bus scheduled to arrive shortly before the airline’s check-in deadline is too tight.

For international departures or families traveling with children, a private transfer directly to Cat Bi Airport is the simplest option. You could also book the return with the same driver or company before leaving Hai Phong.

Heading on to Cat Ba Island after Ninh Binh? Tourist buses combine road travel with the Dong Bai-Cai Vieng ferry crossing.

These trips take around 4.5-5 hours and go straight to the island without passing through downtown Hai Phong. It’s a separate route with different ferry and pickup arrangements, so it’s best planned independently from a normal journey back to the city.

Which transport option should you choose?

A solo traveler staying near Hai Phong Opera House can take a regular bus or limousine with a clear pickup point and a drop-off near the accommodation in Ninh Binh.

For two people with several bags, compare the total limousine fare with the cost of a private transfer, which picks you up and drops you at the door with no taxi at either end.

If you’ve just landed at Cat Bi Airport, are traveling as a family, or only have one day for Ninh Binh, a private car gives you the most flexibility.

Train lovers with time to spare who don’t mind changing services in Hanoi can take the railway.

Ticket price and travel time are the easy things to compare online. On the Hai Phong to Ninh Binh route, the two details to confirm before paying are the pickup point and where the vehicle drops you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to travel from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh?

By private car, allow approximately 2.5-3.5 hours from central Hai Phong to the Hoa Lu or Tam Coc area. Buses and limousines generally take around 3-5 hours, depending on stops, pickup locations, and whether the service starts on Cat Ba Island.

Is there a direct bus from Hai Phong to Tam Coc?

Some tourist buses advertise drop-offs at Tam Coc or near Tam Coc Boat Pier. However, many of these services start from Cat Ba Island rather than downtown Hai Phong. Confirm that the operator accepts passengers on the mainland before booking. For a guaranteed hotel-to-hotel journey from Hai Phong to Tam Coc, a private car is the simpler choice.

Is there a direct train from Hai Phong to Ninh Binh?

No. There is currently no direct passenger train without a change. You'll need to travel from Hai Phong to Hanoi and then connect to a southbound train stopping at Ninh Binh Railway Station. Check both journeys at dsvn.vn, and pay attention to the difference between Long Bien and Hanoi railway stations.

Can I visit Ninh Binh from Hai Phong in one day?

Yes, especially if you hire a private car and leave early. However, the return journey takes several hours, so it's best to choose just one boat experience at either Trang An or Tam Coc. If you'd rather explore without rushing, staying overnight is a much better option.

Can I travel directly from Cat Bi Airport to Ninh Binh?

Yes. You can pre-book a private transfer from Cat Bi Airport straight to Tam Coc, Trang An, or central Ninh Binh. Public buses collecting passengers directly from the airport are less common than services departing from other parts of Hai Phong, so check your pickup point and connecting time before booking.
